Hi there was wondering if anyone really knows what’s on the cards with this fishing restriction that I saw on last night 9 news.
Are they planning to ban all recreational fishing in QLD? This is rather worrying can this be done and what are the chances that this may well be enforces in the future.

"20. ensure that the National Representative System of Marine Protected Areas program has
legislated targets of a minimum of 30% ‘no take’ areas per bioregion by 2012."

"23. require States to implement regional marine planning processes in State waters that complement national Regional Marine Plans."

Those are from: http://greens.org.au/sites/greens.org.au/files/policydownloads/A3%20Marine%20and%20Coastal%20Areas%20June%202008. pdf

what does it mean: It means the Garrette's areas for future assessment..one being 2 nM off DI Point and up along Fraser Island..if declared a no take zone then the pressure will be on the State Govt to ensure the adjoining 2nM is declared the same..that will include no beach fishing from DI area or Fraser Island along the boundaries of that zone.

and in March 2010 Garrett said this:
"I've certainly said that the challenge for us is to pursue what both sides of politics have agreed is the right thing for us to do in terms of protecting the marine environment and that's to have a comprehensive system of marine protected areas right around Australia in place by 2012."

the entire interview is here : http://www.environment.gov.au/minister/garrett/2010/tr20100325.html

Have you noticed that Garrett wants protected areas right around Australia by 2012 and what does the Green's policy say and in what year?
I wonder which Party Garrett is actually in.
