Hi all,

I am just about to start doing a Re-furb on a 3cyl 90hp mercury (1988 i think)

I was hoping someone might advise whether i have i got process right in regards to ordering parts. The history of the engine isnt well known, and i am starting from a complete novice position regarding outboards, so any feedback would be most helpful.

1) I started by finding (what i think is) the serial number on the metal disc under the right cowl. see pic attached. The number is B361194.

2) I then went to http://www.marinshopen.se/ (as an example) to look up the serial number. According to their list, for a 90hp 3cyl Merc, it should be a 1988 build.

90 90 3-cyl 0B240451 0C099999 1988 USA

3) so then, for parts, i went to a Mercury Online parts catalogue, such as the one at www.usboatsupply.com. There, i selected 90 (3 CYL.) Ser # 0B240451 THRU 0C221999 to find my engine.

So then, say i want to replace the Flywheel. I select flywheel/stator from the drop down box, and it gives me a list of parts.

261 9008A16
superseded to
261859234T14
superseded to
261878226T12
superseded to
261859234T15
superseded to
261859234T30

I assume i would then need to order one of these part numbers in order to get a compatible flywheel.

My questions would be, 1) is this the correct process?

2) by saying a part is superseded, does that mean any part in that list in compatible?

and 3) when looking at my current flywheel, its stamped with the number 261-2007c2, which i cant find listed in any catalogue. Can i assume that, as per the parts catalogue for my serial number, this isnt actually the flywheel part number?

As said, i am a complete novice at this, and am hoping someone can advise if i am on the right track before i go out hunting around for parts. any help would be most appreciated.

cheers

d.

Try www.boats.net (http://www.boats.net) to double check but still the last of the part numbers is the only one they will sell unless old stock exists. often just a paint colour change will superced a part.

By the looks of things you have the first of the motors where the oil injection bottle is just foward of the starter on the the starb side, great motors and some say given the weight difference they were a better performing motor than the 4 cyl 100hp.

Boatsnet is a great source for schematics but they won't send Genuine Merc parts to an Aus address, Merc are trying to crack down on the grey import market from complete units to parts.

Can you post a list of all the parts you require.

Hi there are aussie suppliers of non genuine rebuild kits which include all gaskets and also oversize pistons etc.

http://www.robinsonmarine.com.au/store/index.php?cPath=21_60_302

Depends on exactly what is wrong with it and what you end up doing.

crowley marine do em in the usa and also supply fully rebuilt powerheads

Need to resolve exactly what is wrong with the motor if anything and how terminal the problem is. Things like cranksaft condition and corosion basically determin if it is even worth starting the project

In regards to superseeded parts it can be for heaps of reasons from different suppliers to manufacturer, introduction of new numbering systems and so on . Only teh final part number is relevant as it will effectively fit correctly even if i doesn't look the same.
