View Full Version : My importing experience thus far

Inspired by Leezor and Steve's magazine article I thought I'd write a few words about my experience thus far.
Justin at Portsea Marine (Victoria) was the man for the job and it has taken us about 3months to find the right boat. We settled in a Seaswirl Striper 2301 (pics below) in Florida.
Just has arranged for a Peterson trailer (the same as Steve's) and a new set of cushions (the florida sun can be pretty harsh) and a few other bits and pieces.
We both agree the boat is a bloody ripper. So good I might even try and sell it and get a 2601 Striper.
Justin has organised everything and all I've had to do is part with some hard earned when required. With the dollar hoving around 85-87 US its going to work out much cheaper than buying something similar in Australia.
As we get closer ill provide more detail, but to date if you have thought .. do it I can't fault Portsea Marine. We are likely to actually never meet in person but I'd happily do this again through Justin.
Pics below.
Anyone imported a 2601 Striper?

That's a beautiful boat - you'll be pleased with it for sure when it arrives. I hope it has a safe trip over to Aus and it all works out.

Awesome mate.
When did you first settle on the boat, and how much longer have you got to wait?

G'Day Scott,
Funnily enough I guy I know of through a Director at my work has just imported a 2601 (to Cairns) - his is the straight centre console though (not WA) - twin 150 yammie 4 strokes on the back - very nice boat (BIG!!!). - last i heard - couple of weeks ago - it was in brissie and about to come up here. - If i get more details i'll post them up.
Cheers,
Moffy.

Scott,
very nice boats there mate. I am looking at doing the same. Im tossing between the Striper 2301/2101 WA with Alaskan top and the Pro-line 23XP Pilot House. The Alaskans and Pilot Pro-lines are few and far between over there.
Do you mind telling what you paid for the boat and trailer in USD?
Cheers
Chris

Hey Scott,
You pipped me at the post on that boat. I was negotiating on it when you took it.
I've dealt with Justin and Petersen before, and your in good hands.
Did they leave the windscreen in place this time, or has it been removed?

Hi Scott
Great looking rig. A mate of mine imported almost identival rig a couple of years ago, on similar trailer.
Speaking of which, it looks like the side bunks on the trailer are carpet covered? My mates were the same but eventually we got sick of the boat sticking to the carpet and ripped it off and replaced it with teflon skids - now slides on and off easy as! He also upgraded the 250 Yammy to a 300 Zuke 6 months ago - sheesh - does she fly now! 80+km/hr!!
Once you get into the boat you'll find they are absolutely fantastic. I've fished out of mates 2301 many times now and they are in a different ballpark compared to even the best locally built FG boats. I reckon you'll be happy with the 2301. If youve got little kids they will enjoy doing laps in the LBT, too!
Cheers

Can you give us an estimate on the dollars? I have been seriously contemplating doing the same with the same model boat.

How come cars in the US are left hand drive and boats are right hand drive??
At least they get the important stuff right. :)
My striper CC is a left hand drive. Wel the steering wheel is on the left.
Permit to drive a left hand drive boat wasn't that hard to get.....:P

Only had to take in your left hand screwdriver to prove you can do it. ;D
Seriously, nice boat though.

FYI the windscreen stay on.
I've convinced myself that once the boat arrives I'll sell it and buy a 26' one instead. I've now been inside both and I have the towing capacity in the Landcruiser so why not.
Now to sell the 23'! What do you think someone would pay for it? Looking at boatpoint most of them are around $90k surely they are kidding themselves.
I'm thinking around $75k - $80k should get me into a 26'. Although if the dollar goes down then I'll be in trouble.
Any interest out there?
Scott.
