Hi All,

I am looking at upgrading my boat and was just wondering what people thought about the Lewis typhoon (old southern star stealth)

I'm not 100% sure on the configuration I am after, whether to go the CC with front casting platform or a modified version of the Storm with front casting deck, bow mount motor etc. (similar to the Deep V boats in the states)

Does anyone have one of these hulls? If so what are your thoughts.

I mainly fish in morten bay around down to the pin and surrounding areas. I do a lot of soft plastic fishing.

The reason I was looking at the storm was for the social/ comfort factor. I am keen to get into skiing/water sports and hence why I like the option of a 150 on this hull.

The motor I was considering was most likely the etec 150(HO).

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
Ben

Ben! Just do it!!!! I have a Southwind Stealth (the original maker of the hull) with a 4 stroke yammie 100 and it is awesome! I have a R hand side console. The hull is amazing, i use mine as a bay/islands boat, so far ive only ventured say 30nm offshore and it is bloody fantastic, i head out to some close shoals of gladdy and up the top of curtis. Just make sure you get the 115L fuel tank to give you that extra reach.

The hull is super stable, ive had it out in some terrible weather with big swell and ample chop and the hull just cruises along, i feel completetly safe and comfortable in it. It is a super beamy hull and as a result it is like a rock, you can have 3 guys on the one side and it doesnt tilt much at all.

The 100 pushes it along really really well, the 150....it would be like a race boat8-) It et on the plane very quckly and is super stable at high speed, surfs down waves with complete control. Really dry hull it has massive reverse chines, what more can i say?? Im smitten as can be with mine, so the updated version will be even better (they have kept the same hull design which is a huge plus)

Hi Josh,

thanks for the info,

What size bow mount do you have?? I was hoping to get away with a 55lb so I only had a single battery, all 12v and easy charging from the engine.

With the side console, what is it like steering whilst standing?? is the side console too low for this? as alot of the time in the bay the short sharp chop means standing is usually the most comfortable.

Thanks
Ben

Love that hull a lot, no 5m boat rides better. Easier to stand at a centre console when it does rough up.
You'll be better off with a stronger 24V electric when the wind & tide kick in.

Hey Ben ive only got a 55lb thrust motorguide, it does the job. BUT when there is some run you need to run it pretty hard, if you allready have a 55lb then give it a go but if you are buying from new a more powerful unit might be worth thinking about. I have 2 battery's in the boat, one for the electric/sounder etc and a dedicated cranking battery.

In regards to the side console i find it fine, the center console would take up to much room in the boat in my opinion, it is stable enough that you can stand up on the side no worries. In saying that ive never been in a CC version so it may be worth checking it out

The console i have in my boat i think is higher than what would come standard though, with grab rails on the top, if you were to use the normal one it may be too low, maybe.

Thanks guys for the updates.

I was looking at running a starter battery and then a house/troll battery charged from the engine hence the wanting a 12v electric (55lb)

At this stage I am looking at probably getting the storm with the bow redesigned to be a casting platform with live well etc and am electrix motor mount.

something like the american deep v boats
eg http://www.tritonboats.com/boat_detail_new.asp?bid=153

I'm going to visit the guys whilst in Sydney for the boat show and see what they can do for me.

Here are a couple more pics, nice deep V.

So why the storm may i ask??? you seem to loose alot of usable boat space??

Hi Josh,

I was sort of looking at a cross over boat between a fishing boat aswell and a skiing boat, hence the 150hp. I didn't mind the idea of the wrap around windscreen and extra seating.

I usually go fishing by myself and I haven't as yet needed a huge open deck, and after looking at the storm the area infront of the windscreen is reasonable

On the occasions that I go out to the close offshore reefs I didn't mind the extra protection.

Also with the wrap around windscreen and a bow cover it adds a small amount of saftey with chop/waves coming over the front.

cheers

Hey fair enough, which ever internal design you get it doesnt matter you still get the fantastic hull.

Do both models have the anchor well up the front??? Bloody huge super handy

Josh

sorry about raving on i just like these little suckers;D

p.s. i havnt had any water come over the front before and ive been out in some really shitty sea, the only time i get a little wet is some good swell and a real decent side wind blowing the spray up, but anything without a cab will do the same

The storm doesn't have the anchor well, though was going to get this built into the casting desk.

Both the side and center console typhoons do as I beleive they are the same topside mold and then they just add everything from the deck up seperately.

I'm still not convinced on which setup I will get.

Am tossing up between the center console with front cast deck and fold down rear seat. and the storm with a front cast deck, though the rear seat is fixed which sort of sucks would be good if it was a fold down so that you can get into the corners.

With regards to the rear seats have you seen the ones that used to come on the fullboar range of boats???? fully fold down 3 comfy seats?? then they all fold forward to reveal a huge storage area under them, i want to retro fit one to my rig

This pic gives a good idea, the seat has been well used though

I don't mind that style of seating. might have to have a look see whats available.

Though I don't mind the idea of having 2 rows of seating. i.e. a center console with rear seating aswell or twin side consoles and a rear seat.

The other thing I liked about the storm was the side pockets, I am going to see if they can put them in a center console

Hey side pockets...ive been thinking about getting them on the (R) hand side of the boat, would be very handy, (L) side has rod tubes 9ft for fly rods
