Iam Looking At Either A 50hp Merc Or Yammy.
The Displacement On Merc Is 967cc And On Yammy Is 698cc.
Bore And Strkes Are Different As Well.
Iam Only Comparing Specs.
Can I Assume That The Merc Is A More Powerfull Motor?
Might Seem A Dumb Question, It Just Seems A Fair Difference.
Can Someone Put Some Light On This For Me.

Cheers
Greg

Hi Greg are u talking 2 or 4 stroke??

the yamaha 4 stroke is a shade under 1000cc and from what I understand Merc source their 50/60hp blocks from yamaha.

Having had both 2 and 4 stroke yamaha 50's they are great motors, but never had a merc so cant say there.

I do think however this side of a DI 2 stroke the 3 cylinder yamahas are hard to beat out of all 2 strokes in economy, smoke and are surprisingly quiet, in my old boat I could hold a conversation at the tiller at cruise speed fairly easily....

In very general terms, with all other variables ruled out I would buy the one with the bigger engine capacity on the grounds that it should be less stressed to make the same horsepower. There are far more factors to look at than that though. Look at their weight, warranty, after sales service, maintainance costs and of course purchase price.

Matt
Thats What I Would Have Thought, The Bigger Eng Cap The Less Stress.
Weight These Days Are About Same.
Merc Has 5 Yr Warr, I Think. Will Check Yammy Out Today,
I Thought It Was Just Interesting To See The Diff. Just Wonder How The Salesman Tell Me Today

Cheers
