View Full Version : The Tiwi Pearl ate my anchor!!!

I was fishing on the Tiwi Pearl this afternoon. Feeling pretty smug as I was getting a few bites and I was the only one out there.

It took a bit of moving around to get in to the position I wanted to be but eventually I was anchored a little up wind of it with my pillies floating down directly on to it. But then the bites stopped, so I had a look at the GPS and sounder and it looks like my anchor had dragged in the sand and I was now fishing behind it. Nothing for it but to move again. Started the motor and pulled in the anchor....almost!!!

I had hooked the Tiwi Pearl!!!
I tried jiggling it and moving the boat to different angles. I even tried using brute force!!!

I didn't get the anchor back but I wouldn't be surprised to read on here over the next few days that the GPS marks for it are now different!!!

No matter what I did I could not get it off and its still out there.

I saw some drawings somewhere just after it was sunk and as I remember it there is still some superstructure on it (some sort of mast or something like that).
I think my anchor was stuck in that. I was jiggling it and I seemed to get it up a long way from where it seemed to first get caught but I couldn't get it off. when I finally cut the rope it sank back down really quickly as though the anchor and chain was dragging the rope down. I didn't really have much tension on the line when I cut it.
I didn't have my mask and fins in the boat but I think when I jiggled it and worked it I was getting it to a point where it was not all that far below the surface.

As a part of trying to get it off I would try letting it fall back down as far as it would go and then try jiggling it up again. It was a bit frustrating as I feel I was very close to getting it off.

Apart from that I had a nice afternoon, but no fish.

Cheers,
Paul

It's probably the only way Anna leaves us to increase the size/amount of artis we have...

I think you will find when you next go there that it is now a bit closer to that point!!!

If the artifical reef "dissapears", whats the chance they would replace it??

I have an idea :)

Who am I kidding...they wouldnt replace it....or they would promise they would replace it and we wouldnt see a thing for years....

I hate it when you lose an anchor.. Lost one around the pin when the splined rope let go... bah, had to get new anchor, chain, shackes and all. Hate that :(

At least you found the thing, the mark on AF is not 100% accurate is it? Was there Sunday in very windy conditions and got the sh!ts so moved to Harries for a while instead.

I subscribe to the MSQ Notices to mariners. I got sent one that said

"Queensland Notices to Mariners
226 (Permanent) of 2010
Brisbane pilotage area
Locality: Harry Atkinson Reef, Moreton Bay
Activity: vessel scuttled for reef extension
Refer to notice: 221 (P) of 2010
Mariners are advised that the least depth over the 'EX-TIWI PEARL' is 5 metres at Lowest
Astronomical Tide (LAT). Soundings have revealed that the ship lies in an east-west orientation.
The exact position has been updated to latitude 27° 24.532' S, longitude 153° 18.304' E
Mariners are advised to navigate with caution over the sunken ship and note the least depth."

On 16-03-2010 I posted that in the thread started by Phill called "Tiwi Pearl SUNK" here on Ausfish.
Those are the co-ordinates I used yesterday and they put me right on top of it. The Tiwi Pearl is actually a part of Harries .... I gather it just wasn't as close to the rest of it as they planned (until yesterday.... after I dragged it a bit closer;)) I noticed as I was moving round it yesterday there are other lumps showing on the sounder and they had fish hanging off them. so there must be some stuff that has been dumped around it. Maybe they have been dumping stuff to try to connect it to the main part of the reef.... Seems to be a sensible idea... so, on reflection, I'm probably wrong in thinking that they did that.

Gees...you could have put a buoy on it before you cut it off so everyone else could tie up to it so they wouldn't lose their anchors..
Best thing about that is they'd be fishing the wrong spot ;D

Thanks

I still had the original marks in the GPS:'( If I pull up an anchor next time I will give it back;)

How far away is the Tiwi lying from where they originally said it was??

It was spot on the mark.

Actually... I'm not sure exactly what you are referring to when you say "originally said it was" ... I think in the immediate time after they sunk it there was a set of marks published and then those were updated. I didn't bother to look at what the distance was from the original ones to the updated ones.

I did a good sweep of the original marks and could not find it, but I reckon Harries was about 3 football fields distance away, so if you say its almost part of harries, that would be close

Hi Scalem, I saw a notice to Mariners with this in it(Printed it out and put it in my Beacon to Beacon). Right now I cant find the exact Notice to mariners in the MSQ list. I'm sure it will be there somewhere but I knew it was in the thread "Tiwi Pearl Sunk"

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm246/Lucky_Phill/finallocation.jpg

Those co-ordinates that are printed there are the ones I used to find it and it rose up on my sounder exactly as my GPS showed me passing over the mark.

I was ready to post this but Idecided to have a bit more of a look.
I think now I was wrong about it being a Notice to mariners that I saw the map on, (I cant find it there and I did have a good look) Also the pic that I have included here is the one from Phils post as I said it was, but the one I printed for myself is different.
It has contour lines drawn in. It is on the derm web page. This is the one I printed out.

(Still the same co-ordinates though.)
