IMPORTANT NEWS

In relation to the Commonwealth “Area for further Assessment” (Ie. The Commonwealth extension of the Batemans Marine Park)
There is a meeting of INVITED people from fishing clubs occurring at Tuross Heads Country Club, today Thursday 27th May at 4.30pm. If you desperately want to go, ring and ask Ben Scales on 0448 775003.
This will be with the two DEHWA people who had the last minute meeting on the back of Keith Appleby’s boat on 6th May.
Apparently I was mentioned as coming however these two characters thought my meeting with them in Bermagui was enough.
Points too remember
They will say NOTHING of substance
They will say they will AVOID WHERE POSSIBLE the popular fishing spots.
That COMPENSATION will be avoided as much as possible, apart from those in the commercial fishing industry. Ie Land based businesses etc.
They will NOT INDICATE any areas to be set aside as “No Take” they will NOT TAKE ON BOARD suggestions.
All in all the meeting will be a ‘motherhood’ meeting

As suggested by Ric Cumming I have learnt a new ‘public service’ word … DaD which means “DECIDE and DEFEND”
The DECIDE phase (the ‘draft plan’) will come out early 2011 and will have zonings in place. NO NOTICE will have been taken in relation to OUR concerns.
The DEFEND phase will be to ignore our concerns at the consultation phase. They may give a few areas as a sign of good faith.

To those going to the meeting .. Good luck.

Philip Creagh

Greetings All

On Wednesday 26th May the NSW Legislative Council’s Inquiry into Recreational Fishing had its 6th public hearing in Batemans Bay.

The general site, with submissions, is here: http://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/Prod/parlment/committee.nsf/0/AD8A68508B48CC13CA25767E000BD393 (http://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/Prod/parlment/committee.nsf/0/AD8A68508B48CC13CA25767E000BD393)

The page with the day's transcript is here:

Appearing from Narooma was Ric Cumming speaking mainly to spearfishers and the machinations of the Batemans Marine Park Advisory Committee, myself and Richard Tilzey on behalf of the Narooma Port Committee, Ian Smith as a recreational Fisher, Dave Clark and John Moore on behalf of the Narooma Sporting & Services Fishing club.

Everyone put a lot of thought into their submission and questions answered. A message went to the Labor Government about Marine Parks .. will they hear it??

Of course when the transcript is read I am sure everyone could think of many more things they would have liked to have said, and some things more clearly ... BUT I stayed and listened to everyone, except the last, Brett Miners from the Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority.

Everyone sounded clear and correct, except for the speakers from Coastwatchers and the Nature Coast Marine Group who claimed that we needed many more Marine Parks and the speaker from the NCMG who had no idea about fish stock levels.

I had a strong disagreement with Cohen the Greens member that doesn’t sound too bad on the transcript, was stronger in the flesh .. so to speak. Cohen tried to turn the questioning of Brett Miners into an anti timber industry diatribe

The Narooma Port Committee now turns its attention to the Commonwealth Marine Park, still designated an ‘area for further assessment’.
