As an update from this thread

http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/showthread.php?t=157637

I have replaced all the seal and gaskets from the lower and upper units and have finished puting the motor back together.

When I started it on the weekend - nothing except smoke and a backfire.

The fuel that was in the tank has been sitting there for a while but it should have started or attempted to start.

I am going to try new fuel this weekend. Any suggestions?

backfire seems like a timing issue, but you need to be a bit more informative when you get some new fuel (although I kind of doubt that is the problem)

Sorry to be so vague but it's hard to describe what is actually occurring.

I did replace the parts in the carby so it may also be a timing issue.

What did you do to gain a timeing setting for first start? You will get lots of smoke initially, was the backfires more like a sneeze or multiple sneezes?

I honestly didn't check the timing settings. I got lots of white smoke from the lower unit exhaust.

It was a sneeze and only happened the once.

Haven't touched the boat in a while as I believe there is a problem with one of the cylinders and don't particularly want to spend any more money on her. The only option is to take her to a dealer to see how much it would cost to fix, or look at buying a new outboard. Any recommendations with where I should go?
