first up sorry for the noobness first time doing this so want to get it right.

I am just wondering if there is any other safer option or convenient option to mounting a transom mount electric motor while still having a outboard. oh and im throwing it on there to test it this weekend before going and spending money on a deep cycle battery. Do people normaly make up custom plates and weld them on for it to mount to ?

so first up here is the electric motor

its a 44lb jarvis walker watersnake transom mount.

here is the point of mounting its on a angle so its hard to work with to get the motor sitting straight without clamping onto the actual top part of the boat. ( not safe enough imo ).

So i thought i would use some treated pine to mount it as low as i can but the motor sits on a angle.

For the front i need to get some 6mm marine ply? so lift it up off the angle its on for the back of the motor. would this be suffice if it got weight would the clamping of the motor on the wood suffer from the ply getting wet and going soft?. ( i fixed the pic up but it uploaded on a angle sorry for the necks! )

this is how it sits when its on the boat and down as far as i can without the trailer hitting.

So would this setup be ok to use if i can get it all to clamp tight enough? even though the motor is on a angle ?

I figured out what i can do i i will make a wooden braken with a wedge to level it up and then i will have suffice clamping on both sides. saves welding and will come straight off when need be.

G'day

I have a 54lb snake on my 12' tinny... I've clamped it directly to the transom in the same position as you, angle and all.

No ill effect is had with the angle.

Yes, you have worked it out. My first elec was a transom mount. I made a bracket from 12 mm ply. 2 'plates' about 250mm x 250mm (perhaps a bit smaller?), with a wedge shaped spacer inside level with the top. All glued together with Liquid Nails and screwed with galvanised screws. The bracket drops over the transom (tight fit) with one plate inside the other outside - spacer rests on top. Motor bracket clamps it tight.

I put several coats of Estapol on it to protect it. I sold the boat (with the elec) about 2 years later and the bracket was still usable. Worked a treat and cost nothing but a bit of time as I had the materials already.

I now have a bow mount, which is much better, but when starting out on a budget, the transom mount does the job.

Good luck.

004dam, I've tried to send a PM responding to yours, but I get the message that you have exceeded your PM storage space, so you cannot receive any more.

You need to clear out your old PMs to create space. send me another PM with you email address and I'll send you a couple of pics. They are pics 'with' the bracket, not 'of' the bracket - that is the bracket is in the background. But when combined with my description, you should get the idea.
