Hi All,

Going to upgrade. Need something around 6m. I like many boats especially the Seafarer 6m but not sure if this is the right one for down here. Need a little more protection, seen a few good bimini clear set ups on them but it's not fun getting wet down here in winter. A lot of off shore boats here have twin motor set ups or at least an auxillary. Many of the posters on this forum talk about fishing out on the reefs from Queensland which is very far out and most don't have even an auxillary, why is that?

Anyway any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Johnny:smiley:

But seriously a Stabicraft with enclosed cab, maybe.

Yes seriously. Stabis are good but pricey. Very rare to see a used one (enclosed cab).

PS
It is not THAT cold in Tassie. But hey we got fish, beautiful lakes with trout, mountains and not crowded. I used to live on the Gold Coast!

Hi John and J

We wondered where you disappeared to! Do you still have the same tow car?

Seafarers as discussed do hold their value and do provide protection from the elements for fathers and sons as required.

Heres a couple of Victorys
http://boatpoint.ninemsn.com.au/boats-for-sale/boatdetails.aspx?R=8382895

or in Tas http://boatpoint.ninemsn.com.au/boats-for-sale/boatdetails.aspx?R=7589849 but no motor (or bimini etc either?so limited protection unless you add a bimini and clears)

or in Qld http://www.boatpoint.com.au/boats-for-sale/boatdetails.aspx?R=7840208

Cpt Seaweed sold his Vagabond for $48K and that would have been great for you if you could tow it.

Or this Vag in Tas http://boatpoint.ninemsn.com.au/boats-for-sale/boatdetails.aspx?R=7589816

Have you rationalized your accomodation or is that still happening?

Cheers

John,

How is Tassy treating you.

I'm in the process of finding another boat for a relly down in Tassie. This one is to be an offshore hull for tuna and bottom bashing.

We're trying to put together an older hull package and combine it with a new 4 stroke. Something like a big Haines, Yalta, Crusicraft, with a good solid hull - 3/4 inch fibreglass. Chuck a 170hp 4 stroke on it and get clears built and your away.

Might take a bit more to do but probably worth it.

People don't run motor redundancy here because there's lots of boats out and a good VMR / Coastguard network. Not so much in Tassie and when the weather gets rough and you can't get out of there - your in trouble down there.

As a general rule - stay away from plates of pressed hulls - unless you don't mind a bit of bang:wink:

Thanks for the topical thread (for me) whitebeach.
Might be down there ourselves before too long. We love the place, and the weather!
If snelly is still about, he would have some good info too....thanks for the heads-up re glass bugman, was considering a stabi-style/platey because I want to dive (spearfish) and surf as well but would probably end up in a wheelchair lol. Back to the research.....where was that sydelcraft again?

Hi Chimo,

Yes still around. Really enjoyed the Express, awesome little boat and I have put it through hell! Anyway the last trip was a bit too close to the knuckle and need more of a boat under me (and the wife). Did catch a 25 kilo Bluefin on Saturday but nearly got in trouble on the way back from the Monroes, the weather turned and we had to face 30 knot NW winds and a 3 meter building swell out of the south, when we got to the Lanterns it was gnarly, hence the decision to get into something bigger!
As I said I'd love a Seafarer but would need advice on engines etc. Saw one a few weeks ago that had a 140 Suzuki but am not a fan of them (they really are only 120hp).
The b&B business is good. What do you mean by rationalize?

Chimo we still have the same tow car Freelander 2. Had a look at the Seafarers that you suggested unfortunatly they are out of my range $wise. Need something in the high 40's max.

Hi Bugman, Tassie is sweet. Where are you sourcing your boats? I like the idea of just a hull and then putting the motor of my choice.

John,

Looking everywhere. Tassie really has a captive market and we've found that the prices are dear and the range is poor.

I'm looking private around Nth NSW, SE Qld to keep the price down. We've got no time frame - just waiting for the right thing to come up.

Saw a good old hull the other day with a near new zuke 140hp for a great price but the hull was only 17 foot and unfortunately not big enough.

It can get gnarly own that way as you've found out.

Good to see you've got into the tuna. I used to run out of Fortescue Bay a lot in the tinny because the fishing grounds were close but I really wasn"t there at the right time of the year for the good run>

Hi John

Back on topic, not sure if you are interested in plate boats but if so I'd suggest having a look at the Surtees range - NZ built plate boats that are purpose built for similar conditions that you would experience in Tassie - they do have a dealer in Tas now I recall and are selling quite a few boats there.

See: http://www.surtees.co.nz/home.aspx

I have just bought a 5 5 Workmate from them to use up here in Sunny Qld and I can tell you that the ride is excellent and the quality of workmanship and welding (they use pulse mig I reckon) leaves the locally built stuff for dead, fully ISO and CE certified construction process guarantees quality.

Plus the NZ $ is very favourably priced against the Aussie $ at present - saving us Aussies lots of $. I saved over $12K compared to cost of a quite similar boat built here in Aus.

Cheers

Have you looked at Edencraft. They appear to have solid boats and a well balanced one of these will get you out of trouble.

Hey Whitebeach,

You can often pick up good Carribean Reefrunners in the mid to high 40's generally with a 2 banger on the back though. There was a very good early/mid 2000ish model with 175 yammy on for 45K at the MYCT a few months ago.

Personally I would like plate as I do a fair bit of beach access but cost is high in the 6 M range.

Have a look on MDBS tas there's a couple of options.

Cheers

Not much off a selection off quality Seafarers over 6m with a decent motor at the moment... But Hains Hunter and Signatures have a few.... These all have asking prices under $49'000..

A bit off negotiating, and you should be able to land one off these boats in Tassy for there asking price or a bit less...

HY Whitebeach,
Have a look at Tronqued boats on the internet.
Had on shipped to Brisbane, turn the key, drive home.
Brilliant offshore boat. They will build it to your spec, no arguments--28 ft, and bloody good value.
Cheers,
