Fisheries will call it 40cm's and in the big scheme of things that's all that really matters.

yep, direct from DPI QLD:

Fin fish are measured from the tip of their snout to the end of their tail (see illustration). If you unintentionally take a fish (including fin fish or crustaceans) that is not the legal size or is unwanted, return it to the water immediately, taking as much care as possible to avoid causing injury to the fish.

I would stretch out the tail and call it (probably) 41.

It depends on which state you are in as to what the fishing regs say. In some states the measurement is to the fork in the tail and in others it is to the total length of the fish.

In Qld, the total length applies. I think that NSW go by the distance to the fork in the tail. The New South Welshmen might like to comment if otherwise.

Aha. I wasn't sure as with a Gold Coast address, I wondered if you fished both sides of the border.

Some fish have a longer tail or fin. Do you count the long fin or the short fin? ETC as for bream

Longest fin Timddo.
Measurement is longest overall measurement.

Oii Charlie...I reckon some would stretch it out to at least 45cm
Easy to do...just crimple the brag mat a bit and no-ones the wiser.

Yeh - NSW is tip of the nose to tip of the tail !

mind you ...... If they make it fork length (for concave tailed fish) .... there would be less conjecture
From a personal perspective , I use fork length and that way it wont be a case of "oops" if my catch is inspected

Not when the inspectors measure it with their steel rule!

Once when I was inspected, even though my fish were quite visibly well and truly legal even without needing to measure them, the inspector still did the whole bit with their steel rule.

They have told me that the long measuring stickers that many of us affix to the inside of our boats do shrink, thus giving incorrect measurements.

Accordingly, I now have a proper stainless steel rule embedded in a right angled measuring stick just like the official ones like goat boy shows above. The only thing is that the wood that I used is the weather resistant kwila and even though I soaked the kwila for a few hours to bleed it, brown stains have still managed to leech out onto the stainless steel making it a bit tricky to read correctly. (Memo to myself - clean that muck off today!)
