Last nite i went for a walk with my lady along the shorncliffe jetty..as we started along the jetty we noticed a heap of these coloured lights in the shallows (the old swimming enclosure area)..at first we reckoned it was a bunch of people doing whatever???....then the lights in 2 groups of about 20-30 each headed out into the bay... at a good rate (about 6 -8 knts).....we heard a tinny out running around (with a touch of irony no lights on it)....ok its got us stuffed .....any ideas...there were a few castnetters on the jetty...hopefully an ausfisher who can at least say they seen the same thing.....any ideas ?????

Will probably be squid if it was flashes, if it was a more or less constant light I have not seen that before under surface but cannot see why not if their/whatever swimming impacted other bioluminescent micro organisms.

Ok, haven't ever seen red but if a dull green it and there was some even minor breaking wave action or some type of impact like say a boat wake through it or even a rod tip through it, could have been phosphorescence, which again can be micro-organisms (dinoflagelates but others to I understand), I have seen it a fair few times around MB but years ago.

It was the navy guys in kayaks. They leave from TS Paluma Naval Cadets base. They have glow sticks tied onto their paddles and kayaks. Not sure what they are doing, but they have been out there a bit lately.

People paddling was going to be my suggestion too Andy.

See them occasionally on the river at dusk/night....

I saw them out the front of the VMR base when they came back. Also heard the boat without navlights come screaming into the creek. I was talking to a cop at that time, said to him then need to get the radar gun down and catch some of the idiots speeding through the marina.

I was thinking along the same lines, maybe an arvo session at the seaview.
