G'day all,

I was running fuel oil mix at 50:1, the second last time i went out i trolled back to the ramp for about 1/2 an hour, when home cleaning the boat i noticed black oil residue had dripped from above the prop down onto the prop. I spoke to the Yammie mechanic and he told me to start mixing at 100:1, which i'm now doing.... Just interested to know what all you blokes run your Yammies at, the mech told me i could do more motor damage running 50:1 then 100:1.
The motor is a well looked after and not overly used 2000 model 2 stroke 3 cyl 30hp.
Interested to know your opinion????

Definately 100:1
All Yamaha 2 stroke up to 40hp are 100:1

Hi Mate,

I just did a search on the Yamaha site for an owners manual of your motor - if I found the right one it does say 100:1.

I did hear a while back that the 100:1 was merely done in the smaller motors for emissions... not sure how true that is though. As a part of that it was suggested that 50:1 gave you far greater protection if the motor got hot due to a blockage or similar.

I run my 50 on 50:1 - the manual does state that figure, it is a little smokey when trolling or doing your 6 knots but despite long periods of both I have never had any problems with the motor oiling up or getting difficult. Not even a little cough...

If I could make a suggestion, I use more premium oils, Penrite or Yamalube and more recently BD50 which is awesome for smoke reduction. If it were me I would probably run 50:1 with a better quality oil to reduce smoke and carbon buildup.

Cheers.

Mate I have owned 2 yammies 1st was a 25hp 2001 model 2nd was a 50 hp 2007 model.

Ran them both at 50:1 (after recomended run in period) did not have a problem the worst you can do is oil up the plugs which in modern engines dosent pose a huge problem from my expierience.

I am not a mechanic by any means but as far as I know too much oil wont hurt unless you are running evryday.

I have a 2003 40HP Yamaha 3 cylinder, I bought it new and after the run in stage I have always ran it at 50:1 Yamalube, 7 years and no problems.

What does the manual state? Why would you run it at anything different to what the manufacturer suggests?

I run my Suzuki 30hp at 50:1 even though the manual states 100:1. The trouble with these and similar motors is that they don't get enough oil near full throttle with 100:1. So if you want you motor to last a long time without a rebuild then I'd use 50:1 - you won't notice any ill effects by the way.

Split the difference on the 100:1 models and go 75:1 but use a known good oil.

If you want to run 50:1 simply get your engine tunned to run on the mixture you want to use, The problem maybe finding a decent mechanic who can do this for you :P

As Billfisher has mentioned the issue will be enough oiling for heavy loads and higher use RPM

Well from those mixed responses it goes to show that both mixes are not overly harmful....... So my thoughts are i'll keep using the Yammie Oil mixed at 100:1 as the Yammie mechanic told me, this was my plan anyway, but was just interested to see what the rest of you guys did...... On the last trip out i did enjoy the smoke free air when trolling..... even if i didn't land anything, though did sound up a couple of holes to spend some time at next trip.
Thanks for the replies.

im doing a compromise 75:1 but i run around at full tit all the time

my theory is its just a marketing ploy by yamaha to cut emissions and make its self stand out no other brand says 100:1 whys that ?

Consider that many post mixing outboards run 50:1 ans the richest mix at idle and lean out to 70:1 or leaner at full throttle, running 100:1 in a modern engine with a modern oil does not sound inreasonable.
The newer oild will seperate in the crankcase and stick to the walls better then and older technology oil.
Running75:1 with a modern oil sounds reasonable
