As the title says ive been thinking about a new sounder for a while now.
I have a lowrance x135, i have moved the transducer left, right, up, down, angled forward, backwards and still when i get to 10 knots it cant see nothing but bottom, i want to see bait on the move ie;25kt. i have been leaning towards furuno 620 or 585, now the 620 i can get a Airmar TM258 tranducer and stay in buget but the 585 will just have a cheap trany.
I am open to all other sounders but lowrance as they arnt makin to many people up here happy.
I fish up to 150ft of water mostly around the 50ft to 100ft mark and the boat is a quiny 620 CC.
Any feedback would be great but please keep the brand bashing to a min please:-X

585 with a standard transducer will be heaps to 150 ft and you have the advantage of the larger screen and integration with a GPS.
A 1kw tranducer has its downfalls like it is the size of a brick and you have water spray issues and worry about thumping it on the trailer/ beach etc.
You can always connect a bigger one later on but you will find it is not required.

Cannot guarantee that it will work at 25knts but because this depends on your hull, positioning, but should not be any dramas.

Transom tranducer to hull internal is a whole argument on its own. The old rule of thumb was on a tinnie, transom and glass inside the hull, but people seem to make them work on aluminium boats these days. I like transom but big downfall is hitting it on the sand/ debree etc, $1000 transducer lot of cost to damage.

Go the 585 can always upgrade transducers late.
Also look at the possibilty of a thru hull fitment!!

We've got a 620 with a thru hull transducer. At about 25 knots we read the bottom pretty well, depending on teh weather etc.

If you are only fishing those depths, I can't see the value in going to a 585 if you are only going to run a 600W transducer on it, because it will perform the same as the 620, just the 585 has a bigger screen.

We got our 620 with the thru hull for less than $1500.

matty, i have a furuno 620 and so far im pretty stoked with it. It hasnt got as high resolution as some other brands but with the furuno what you see on the screen is what is actually there not a dolled up version of the bottom. I love the simplicity of the nobs on the furuno to adjust your gain and change between screens also. Ive only had it out on 2 reef trips so im still geting used to the interpretation of the screen but last trip it showed a good show of fish in 43m of water so we dropped pick and scored 3 trout 5kgs each and 3 nannygai the best being 7.5kg and a mixed bag of other reefies. I personally dont think you can go past furuno for offshore fishing.

ps i have the shoot thru hull transducer on my yalta craft and even at 30knts i get a pretty good picture

Thats why i went with the 620 in the end, the 585 was what i wanted but was at least 1500 with ducer, bcf looks to be the cheapest in australia.

Been out a few times now with the new sounder, its sweet!! I can see the bottom all the way to 35kts :)
Very happy with the 620, i think the 585 would be too big on my center console.

I've had the X135 for a few years now. Can see everything clearly at any speed. Maybe I fluked the transducer. Great unit that still spots fish.

I think it has a lot to do with the hull also, i mounted the new ducer in the same spot as the old one, i didnt mind the 135 at 6knots it was great but this furuno is on another level:shocked:

MattyDucati,
Looking at purchasing the FCV620 sounder but with a 520IHD transducer from the same supplier as you. Curious as to the delivery time and was the total cost including postage under $1000AUD because with the 520IHD it just sneaks over the $1000 AUD and may attract GST.

Thanks in advance
