went to check my crab pots, and found that some of them were simply falling apart.

not my old cheapies, but instead it was the $50 each models. All of the cords had disintegrated completely, hole in top and bottom of the pot, plus sides / funnels all collapsed. The mesh is all fine - just the cords were crap material.

I have rebuilt them with some quality cord, but this is not quite what you expect after only 1 season from a $50 crab pot.

not happy

I'm wondering now if this is an intentional thing, designed in to ensure that lost crab pots don't keep killing things.........

I don't want to be too harsh, but as I don't intend losing my pots, I want them to last........

Pots should only start to fall apart over a lengthy period. i.e. greater than 6 months if left to soak for that time, otherwise you should be able to get more then 12 months use if they are looked after i.e. washed down with freshwater and stored out of the sun and allow air to circulate through the material.

I never wash my pots, but my old cheapies are 10 years old and going strong - rusty hoops, but netting and funnels are all ok.

Thats why I was so surprised by these ones falling apart.

BCF pots are tinned coated and will rust on the 2nd trip. I have had BCF pots fall part after 2 years but hey at $12.50 each, it's better to buy new ones then repair them. I too have the expensive pots and they are much more heavy duty then the cheapies. 4 Cheapeis = 1 good pot

I will give my dillies a last chance to prove themselves this month. If they don't perform i'm dumping them :D .;D

yep, mine rusted after second trip, looked really rusty the third trip and now still look the same 10 years later.

better to buy the good versions of the cheapies by the look of it.

sounds like cheap inferior metal from China.

nope, locally made.

It was the thin cord that holds the funnels in shape and tension, and draws the top nd bottom closed that fell apart.

The netting and the galvanised rings are in perfect shape
