I'm looking for advice on a good quality tyre that would suit a 3500kg tandem trailer, fitted with 15 x 6" rims. Preferably not too high in the side wall and reasonably priced.

A net search has found the Dunlop SP175E, 195R15C 106S but it doesn't list a price. Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Dave.

Can't help you with the tyres Dave, but how confident are you that boat will come in under 3.5t? Must be right up there.

Cheers

Yeah, a little nervous Trent.... though it will be on an alloy trailer with torsion axles, so that will save a fair bit of weight over steel. I think she'll be ok dry, so may need to keep the fuel to a minimum till I get to the ramp. If worst comes to worst I guess I'll be looking for an F250 and another axle for the trailer :-/

You can buy tyres that size but I would be more concerned with the load rating of the tyres. I have a 7.3meter alloy boat which come in at 3 tonnes and I have 15inch ford rims with 8 ply truck tyres fitted.

Thanks Stu. Those Dunlops I mentioned should be ok with a 106 load rating (950kg per tyre). Was hoping to find a few other options and hear from people like yourself with first hand experiences; good and bad!

Tyres are going to be a function of the rim capacity (do you know what the rims are rated for?") and the number of axles, 2 or 3? With the right rims (and the right tyres) you could get away with only 2 axles but just being 15 x 6" rims really does not mean all that much.

It is not real good putting a light truck tyre on a ford rim and having to run 60 psi

As you probably know its very important, with such big weights, to have the trailer setup spot on. I read a report on seamedia where one of the Websters got it wrong with an alloy trailer. They ended up bending the trailer and blowing out most then replacing all four 16" 4wd tyres, on the first trip.

Turned out the axles were too far foward and the height at the towball was too low resulting in unequal weight distribution.

Yes, as will the axles (tandem trailer = two axles), spring capacity etc. Very much aware of all of this, but was just asking about tyres.

Thanks JJ. I have read all about their issues. Their boat was also close on 4500kg, so a little heavier than what I'm looking at. I expect the trailer will be well balanced, and providing that and that I use good tyres that are load/speed rated appropriately, then I don't see why I would have any problems. Hence my search for advice on tyres.

low loader tyres are 17 dia maybe to much carrying capacity truck radials in 12 ply would carry anything you put on it 300 each .continental any brand would do as its not a driver

I have recently had a bad experience with tyres.
They were supplied with the trailer and were called Nankang super trippers.

The tyres were two years old and started seperating on a tow up to townsville.
They were rated at 950kgs or something like that. I had to pull over in Proserpine to get 5 new tyres. My boat and trailer ended up weighing more than we thought and comes in under 3500kgs dry weight (no fuel).

I purchased 5 brand new Maxi Miler 225/70 R150 PR LT
These are GT Radials and you should pay about $180 per tyre. The max load for these with a dual axle trailer is 1050kgs.

I have been advised by a friend who runs a tyre business that these are good tyres.

Hey Mate,

have a look at these

http://www.bridgestone.com.au/tyres/treads/r623.aspx

Had a set on the 2wd old hilux - good mileage and held on ok.

Pretty tough tyre for what it was.

I think you would get them for around $120-130 a tyre - I'm putting a set on my new trailer, well in 14 inch anyway.

Personnally I wouldn't put anything other than a LT tyre on.

What is the load rating of the Rim?

EDIT - looks liek I posted when the site went down...
