Anyone fitted a Raymarine S1000 to a Lowrance HDS10?

Had the auto pilot connected up to my old Raymarine A70 and it worked perfect, however with the same connections to the HDS 10 the Autopilot doesn't reconize it.

Any tips?

Hi Luke,

Most likely the nmea 0183 port is turned off in your HDS, you have to turn it on.

You will nead to connect the following wires

HDS yellow to orange on S1000
Blue to blue on S1000

I have an HDS8 hooked up S1000 and it works great.
Let me know how you go.

Cheers
Blake

If you are updating to a new software version on your HDS unit you might notice DSC on your VHF not working, or maybe some other communication to another device not working. This is because when updating to the latest software NMEA0183 output is set to off by default. What does this mean? It simply means you need to go into your menu and turn on NMEA0183 again. So this is just a "heads up" which will save you from some head scratching. Here is a tutorial put out by Navico:

HDS Software Advisory
Version 2.5.31.56 defaults NMEA 0183 output messages to off.
Product:All HDS
Software version:2.5.31.56
Effective date:10/19/09 onwards
Update Logistic Center stock:No
Update Distributor stock:No
Product recall:No

Dear Colleague,
This is to inform you that when a customer installs the latest software onto an HDS unit that the NMEA 0183 output sentences setting now defaults to off. If you have a customer who needs to be able to interface with NMEA 0183, i.e. DSC VHF, then they will need to manually turn the output sentence settings on.
First make sure that the NMEA 0183 Output in enabled:
Press the MENU button twice.
1) Highlight Network
2) Select NMEA0183 Output
3) Press Enter to activate
The NMEA 0183 output is now active.

Next you have to enable the NMEA output sentences:
1) Scroll down to NMEA0183 output sentences…
2) Press the right arrow > on the key pad.
3) Highlight the heading of the type of output data you need, i.e. GPS, Navigation, etc.
a. *THE POPUP HELP SAYS TO PRESS MENU FOR MORE OPTIONS, THIS CURRENTLY DOES NOT WORK.*
4) Press the right arrow > on the keypad.
5) Highlight and press ENTER on each of the output types to enable them.
a. Repeat this for any other type of output data needed.
6) The output sentences that have the dot shaded blue are now active.
7) Press EXIT

Got working in the driveway, cheers

Is there an option to set the filtering to weak on the HDS? My S1000 handset is now displaying "No GPS Fix" does yours do this?

The "No GPS Fix" reading is normal.

You have to be underway for 30 seconds or so to get a fix.

The Raymaine used to display "Too Slow" - must be a Lowrance thing?

Ill try it out on the weekend, thanks for the help.

Hi guys, bought an S1000 for my boat, but it’s been sitting in its box for 5 months while I decided if I wanted the virtual rudder system or conventional rudder sensor system. I decided on the latter and hence put it on ebay (didn’t want to be restricted to 2.5 – 3kn minimum speed). Still, pretty good value for money for what you get with it compared to what else is available. I know if I want to match my Furuno gear their autopilot is hideously expensive in comparison.

Do you find the minimum speed a pain if you are livebaiting etc?
cheers

I use it on a Lowrance 7200C to the s1000

I found it imparitive to only use the output nmea of the GPS to the input wire of the s1000 (1 wire only) mine works fine with 4800 baud rate.
