Headed across a flat as Bay at 4.30 this morn....heading for Hutchies.
Was with Chris (aka Grey Ghost) in his 6.8 HH "Shiraz" & also with fellow fisher Trev.
Plan was to target Hoo & Spanish...& other speedsters. !!!;D

Was only 1 other boat when we arrived & a spread of lures (skirts & hard bodz) hit the water at 5.45. Conditions were brilliant & expectations were high as there appeared to be plenty of bait on the surface & below.

Well to cut a long story short ...we trolled the water to foam...from Hutchies down to Flinders & well wide & beyond for ZIP !!!!! Did a bit of bottom bashing ...but all quite there to. Then someone turned the big fan on & a solid 15/20 knot NE arrived about 11...not good :-/
Well as they say ..its not over till its over & with a final troll we hit the jackpot with a soild hookup on a big skirt. Trev's rod ....so he on. We were all thinking a big Hoo or Spanish as Trev held on....didn't even think MARLIN :o Trev yells its coming up & yes a small marlin (presume black) breaks the surface about 70 M back. Choas followed with all other lines being cleraed & cameras found. Trev eventually gets the fish boat side & it's got energy to burn. It does its best to pull him over the side & under the boat a couple of times.....a bit of frantic driving by Chris gets it out the backagain. With a few hurried pics being taken its boat side again....& were thinking we can get him in for a quick pic etc....the Marlin has other ideas & hits the afterburners. Trev's 24 kg rod buckles over & explodes big time & the fish is gone. :'(

A few colourful words follow.....!!!!!!

Any way a great day day to be out (thanks Chris) & a first marlin boat side for "Shiraz" ;D
Have attached a few pics....I hope.

Cheers

Nice to get the marlin right at the end...it must have made the effort seem worthwhile.
Did the rod really explode...break?

Cheers,

Reefer

Thanks for the replyies lads.

Tim........it was an Okuma rod, nice rod but don't think it was made to handle a charging marlin boat side.
Not sure on weight ...but estimate 50 + kg....it was a solid looking fish.

Reefer.....mate it just snapped about half way...but sounded like a rifle shot. !!!!
Have not seen that before. He might get a new rod for Valentines day ::)

Cheers

great stuff Phil! I think you did well to get some photos. Have you actually landed any pelagics this season??

I assume you had wire on given your target species???

well done on the Marlin:D , bummer about the rod. I've only seen one rod break while being loaded up and it wasn't on a fish (drunk man error in the shed).:-X
