Hi guy's i am after a trolling combo which will mostly be used for trolling big x-raps and skirts for pelagics in summer and maybe a bit of live baiting in winter whilst i chuck plastics around, i won't be doing any bottom bashing with stinky dead bait as i don't like that sort of fishing. I have had a bit of a play with goldfinch's live fibre and tyrnos 30 two speed which didn't feel to bad but im just wondering what other rods and reels i should consider.

My budget is around $600-$700

I'm prepared to buy the reel from the states if i can save some $$$ too

cheers tim :)

You might go a little bit over, but you could get either a trinidad or a talica sent over and match it to a rod like the live fibre. The new daiwa saltist ld 2 speed reels are also quite good.

I'm finding that i'm using my light jig outfit (Torium 16 /Tcurve 200 & 65lb braid) for just about everything. I have dedicated trolling outfits but the Tcurve is just a joy to use and the braid is great fun on pelagics

Does anyone use large spin reels for trolling, like the saragosa 18000 etc or are overheads the best for this sort of work ???

Why don't you get a stella like goldfinch. I prefore spin reels to overheads

Nar i don't wanna spend around $1300 for a rod and reel, $600-$700 max

I am the same, i much prefere using spin reels than overheads, only because i get this weird shock feeling in my arm when fighting big fish with overheads, not sure why this happens maybe because i broke my wrist years ago.

cheers tim :)

Mate I have just ordered a Saragosa 18000F and have Stu at Precision Rods building a rod for me.
Will be well under your budget even spooling with braid.
20kg of drag out of the box.
I plan on having two rods for the reel and getting a second spool.
So it can troll on the way to a spot, then swap rods and spool for jigging etc.
Just a thought.

I decided i'm going to get a T Curve deep jig 400 rod and bolt a 18000 Saragosa to it, it's main use will be trolling hardbodies and skirts and occasionaly some knife jigging.

How about a second hand TLD combo. That would be perfect for all the jobs you want it to do!;D
