The lowrance in the 83/200 transducer will be suited to the waters up to around 40-50m mark in fresh and salt where the fcv 620 is designed as a saltwater unit. Hope this helps

Hey Lach, I am not sure how the fcv620 would go in the dams but they are awsome in the salt. Most dam fishos seem to use humingbird or lowrance, not sure why? I reckon the hds would suit you, maybe get a combo so you have a backup plotter.

My 620 has a fresh water mode & a salt water mode works awesome at sommerset dam.

For freshwater and shallow regions the HDS would be a better option because of the option to upgrade with the sidescan. Also price differential may come into it. If it was me, I'd spend a couple of bob more on the HDS5 and have the advantage of the GPS if required. It is also much easier to do software upgrades as it has the SD card slot.
