A former Western Australian sea rescue volunteer who made a bogus call for help prompting a massive sea search has been jailed for six months and ordered to repay tens of thousands of dollars to cover the cost of the rescue effort.

25 year old Scott Bradley Pike used a marine radio in October to claim he was on a boat that was taking on water off Rottnest Island.

He then listened as 30 volunteers, seven boats and two planes conducted a two day search.
Pike was ordered to pay more than $54,000 - the cost of the rescue effort.

The Magistrate said the seriousness of the offence had to be taken into consideration and that the offender's actions had placed the community in danger.

Pike already has a conviction, in 2004, for making bogus radio calls to flight controller and pilots at Perth airport.

Good. I am glad he was jailed. Shame about the term.
