Hummingbird Sounders / Fish finders - I have now had 2 Hummingbirds and both have had the same prob. That is when i pick up boat speed the sounder either reads the depth as a minimum of 1 foot or lately with my new unit it stops reading and charting the bottom. Once I Stop or considerably slow down then its back good again.

Anybody got an idea ?
Is this a Hummingbird thing ?
Should I get rid of it go to another Brand ?
Any reccomendations. Mainly to be used in Moreton Bay and Gold Coast seaway

Cheers

This site has a wealth of info on Humminbirds. It's mainly for sideimaging but tranducer mounting problems are the same. You may have to join the group before posting.

Hey Sheriff I had the same problem on my old boat, I even went to a Humminbird night held by Tim Morgan armed with a stack of photos. Mine was a 797 I mounted it as per instructions and he told me to throw them out. I end up mounting the transducer right in front of the engine,. I had a look at his tournament boat and his was mounted in front of the engine. I have since put it on my new boat and at 70km/h its still clear. What I did was mount it with double sided tape and go for a short run to see what spot works then mount it. Hope it put some light on ya drama.
Cheers Gav

thanks gav,
My rig is a Tournament as well.
Only had it a few weeks
Transducer is located about 2/3 the way from the keel to the outside hull bottom.
It puts up a big tail when motoring along at speed which makes me a little concerned there is too much friction there.
When you say "to the front of the engine" are you meaning dead centre of keel in line with the cavitation plate ?

Cheers mate

Gaz, what type of double sided tape did you use that resisted both the salt water (I'm assuming) and the force of the drag from running at speed?
I too lose my depth at anything over about 15-20kph, and throw a decent rooster tail.
From what I've been told and read, my mount for the transducer is too far out from the keel (see pic), and if I'm going to drill holes directly into the hull, I'd like to make sure that I get it right the first time!
(and yes, I have adjusted my trailer skids ;D)
Cheers!

I used the tape they stick side mouldings onto cars with its not a permanet thing but its gives you a rough idea .

And it held up ok when underway, over the course of the day?

My brother does a lot of work with smash repairs, and actually specialises in plastic repairs himself, so I might be able to score some decent tape off of him....
