Hi

Anyone out there a small diesel mechanic who can help me with a few tests on a 27hp 3 pot yanmar that is in a boat the family is looking at. Have little faith in the usual suspects at a marina as they know there is little to no comeback in regards to saying it is OK for age - that means stuff all

Need to know if there is specific points to do a compression test or a way to check pumps and injectors on these. What to watch out for and any wat to confirm if there is bad corrosion ( if they suffered that) as it is raw water cooled.

Cheers

depending on the model, there was lots of Yanmars designed for raw water cooling, but also lots that were not, but still done that way anyway, I guess as a general rule of thumb, start the engine from complete cold, does it start easy? did it blow smoke? if so what colour? is the oil clean and topped up? does the general appearance look as though it has been "loved"? if in doubt, get at least a diesel mechanic to give it a bit of a once over, just like a car or boat or anything else, if it is way out of your area of expertise, call in a specialist, the dollars it may cost will be saved later on.
