View Full Version : Advice on Correct Axle Placement

Hello All,

The previous owner of my boat and trailer moved the axle rearward - as he said "to enhance high speed towing and reversing procedures" the result is now there is far too much weight on the towball and it is almost impossible for even a strong person to lift manually - I have no hope.

My questions are, is there a formula that is used to caculate the best position or is it question of just trial and error - moving it forward until the balance is almost perfect and it becomes dead easy to lift the drawbar.

Also any recommendations of who may be able to perform this modification for me.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

camboy

You should have 10 percent of the total weight (boat, motor and trailer) on the tow ball for safe towing (single axle trailer).Go to light and you will get uncontrollable swaying possibly dumping your boat on the side of the road somewhere.Best idea is go to a weighbridge and weigh your entire rig then back off and just drop the jockey wheel on and get them to weigh that when you remove the vehicle.
