I have a cruisecraft 685 Outsider running twin Yamaha 115 4 strokes. I got into a debate with a mate about the right way to flush them after a trip offshore. :-/
The 115s have a thin hose on the left hand side that can be disconnected and then connected up to the garden hose. When you turn the hose on, water sprays from a range of points on the motor. Can/Should you run the motor when the garden hose is attached or is the best way still with the good old ear muffs ?
The ear muffs are lower down the leg, at the normal pickup point. His argument was that the garden hose connects higher up near the powerhead and you should not run the motor while the garden hose is attached. My view was that if the engine is in neutral there should be anything spinning in the leg anyway and connected to the hose was OK.
What is the best way to flush them ? Engine on Engine off ? Hose or muffs ?
Any ideas or thoughts fellas ?::)

hi bluewater 66, mate the best way ,go to bunnings and buy a big tub about $59.00 fill it up and run the motors in it ,that way the motors are flushed out properley and themostats can open ,keep eye on water level ,i normally keep hose running in tub also less noise thanks mike

The water pump impeller will still spin when the gearbox is neutral with the motor running (ie. water comes from the telltale with the muffs on). I think the hose attachment is for flushing the powerhead without the motor running, but it wont flush the leg or water pump.
I'd use the muffs, there's nothing like a warm motor (running) to help clear the salt out!;)

mate never start the engines to flush, it will do more damage, as they need more pressure than the house hose will deliver, all is needed is to connect the the hose to the flush port on the engine and run for 2/4 minutes it will spin the impellor and give a complete flush.

I thought the impeller was on the main shaft it can't spin without the motor
running ?

My 115 Yammy 4S is all of 55 hours old so I still remember the instructions 6 months ago when I picked it up. The connection on the side is designed for when you don't want to start the motor, such as late at night and you don't want to wake the neighbours by starting the engine, but wash the salt out of the powerhead. Don't do both, connect on the side and run the engine. Use ear muffs or a flush bag/ Barrell all other times.

By flushing using a tub aren't you just recirculating the salt back through the motor..diluting it but still pushing it back through? I would recommend using the muffs.
