Looking at trading in my 150hp EFI 2S for this motor.

Has anyone got any reports, both good and bad about this motor.

Whats the fuel economy like? Or should i just go a Suzi 4 stroke for the economy.

Thanks in advance.

I don't have a 225 but I have a 200 opti at the back of my Trophy, they are the same 3.0 lt as the 225hp.
excellent engine , no probs at all and very thrifty. The Trophy weighs well over 2000kg with fuel and gear, I get 1.6 km per lt average . trolling at 50-600 rpm she uses under 2 lt per hour .
If you get an Opti make sure you get smartcarft gauges .

personally I would go the suzuki cause I prerer 4 stk, one thing but if you do go the 225 opti you will probably notice a slight increase in performance over your 150, your eyes being pushed back into your head will be one of the first things you notice:P You should also get 30-40% better fuel economy if you dont get heavy handed with the throttle

Thanks Men for your thoughts.

I am tossing up the Suzi option as well. I'm seeing the dealer today to discuss change over prices and will compare the 225 opti to the 200 suzi and see what the difference is. I'm really just after good fuel economy. Do you think the 225opti and 200suzi will be similar???

in a word yes, but I am not too sure about going up 50% HP from an EFI to an Opti will give you a 40% better fuel economy.

Try it , I did 115merc to 135 popti full days trolling 50% but hey wtf would I know. That opti 225 will be very understessed on a boat that perfoms with 150

G'Day Noel

Have to agree with siefried ( for a change ) on this one, went from a carburetted 175 to a 200 Opti and gained about 40%, quite amazing.

Granted the HP jump was not as significant but a 225 on the Trophy would do it easy, I suggest 3800 would give about 50 ~ 55 k's/hr.

I get about 50 km/hr @ 3800 on the Haines getting 1.6 ~ 1.8 KM/L, trouble is keeping the hand off the throttle.

Depending on $$ difference between the 200 and 225, the 200 would be plenty on that boat.

Cheers

Thanks guys.
My situation is either getting a 09 225hp opti for 11700 change over or a 08 200suzi for 12 change over both brand new. I'm wondering how much oil is used in the opti? I've been comparing the cc's on both motors, and the suzi seems to have a far bigger block. I'm no tech head by any means... but i thought it would be hard to beat cubes. After all, i'm really after better fuel economy, and i'm thinking the opti maybe on par for fuel ,but then i have to add the oil in also....

Give the guys at Cunninghams Marine a bell as they sell both Mercs and Suzi's. I spoke to them about swapping the 200 Opti for a 200 Suzi and they mentioned I'd be better sticking with the Opti - 5% better fuel economy and 5% more power. Give the guys a call as they do this for a living, then take their info and work on that. Surely the info from them would be better than all of us 'experts' on here.

The 200 Suzi is close to $25k.

I did exactly this a few months ago. Although I only have a 115hp, I knew I wanted either a Zuke or Opti, however the Zuke was $4200 more than the Opti at the time/deal here!!!:o So it was really a no brainer! Super happy with the Opti, uses half the fuel, half the oil of the original 2 stroke and the smart craft gauges are a great bit of kit.

Both are different but great engines. Fuel usage will be similar, the Opti is lighter and service costs a wee bit cheaper, waranty is similar, good dealer/service is also important, but for the prices you were quoted I would probably go with the Zuke.

I would agree with the other comments too, 200hp will be plenty
Cheers

thanks guys again for your personal feedback. With only $300 difference in change over, its just a hard decision which way to go. I'm also thinking long term if i sold the boat which motor would be more likeable etc. The only thing is the zuke is a 08 plated motor compared to a 09 Mariner Opti.
