about my only chance to be granted one is for Christmas so i have a bit of time. I want it mainly for running proper topographic maps when offroad + all of the other multimedia stuff is nice if included.

Does anyone have one? Any advice welcome on good brands and best abilities etc, units up to about $600 I hope.

Hi Fnq ,
just be interested if they can be loaded with the proper topo maps a usually they are on a seperate card added in the back and you just slip in the card required . I have a tom tom gps road map thingie for the last two years great for around suburbia and some country places and you have to update it to keep up with { so read be 6-12months behind }local council maps , but i have a garmin hand held that I have mounted on the dash and if it is in the car where I use it for work it has the topo map installed via the removeable sim card in the battery compartment , but, when I go fishing , I always change it to the marine sim card which ensures that if some thing goes wrong with the gps combo onboard , I got a back up .

Hi Greg yeah i understand they can run hema and other maps even Oziexplorer can be loaded into them to run moving maps etc or they will run the .e?? or whatever standard file extension it is on the government digital topographic maps, forget now...all sounds pretty trick! They also can act like a standard navigator also with the card they supply but thats about the extent of my knowlege on them.
