Took the tinnie for a run up the seaway the other day. On the return trip I encountered problem:
Engine revs out fine when in NEUTRAL, but put IN GEAR and it only reaches walking pace when throttle held wide open...
Have replaced sparks today and will test it out this weekend? Do you think this could of be what caused the problem or something else? Any suggestions?
Thanks
Ben

need to do the very easy stuff first, try a complete new tank/hose and primer with fresh fuel, does it go Ok with the choke on? did the motor sound as though it was labouring? did it rev like buggery, but not go anywhere? do some very simple checks before you start to panic

Hey Noel, thanks. Will try a new hose first as it would be over 10 years old now I guess. What do u mean by 'primer'?
Motor didn't rev like buggery, it more or less kept low revs at throttle wide open.

the primer is the squeeze bulb thing, if you pump it while the engine is running in kind of bypasses the fuel pump, and by the way, do not operate the engine like that for a long periods, as you may damage the motor permanently.

Just check fuel filters as it could be blocked

Hi there,
I had similar prob to my 15hp mariner 2stroke. It wouldn't rev properly, after much fidling round I took it to a mechanic and he diagnosed the problem was one of the coils in my ignition had died (or something round that part of the engine, I am not very mechanically minded and had no idea what he was talking about) but what he explained was it was only fireing on one cylinder. So he replaced it and cleaned the carby and all is good now, runs like a bought one.
I am not saying this is what is wrong with yours, but this is my experience.
As Noelm has said do the easy things first and hopefully you can sort it out before you need to move deeper into the engine and your wallet.

Is the motor still revving 'normally' when you put it in gear and just not moving fast?, It might not be an engine or fuel problem. You could have spun the prop, when it is it will slip at higher speeds and will only go slow.

Posibly stuck float? only cause Iv'e had some probs with my carbs latley,
either pull the air cover off, prime the bulb and see if fuel spews out of the carb, or run the engine for a short time then pull the plugs and see if one or all are soaking wet,
Is it carbed? cheap to check anyway
