Hey guys I'm in the market for a new/2nd hand plate in around the 6-7m mark upgrading from our 19ft haines halfcab. My budget would probally be up to 70 grand. I will be fishin out off of the wide bay bar and keen to stay out overnight and do a few trips to the shelf when weater permits.

I have looked into riptide, bluewater alloy, Sea Storm and a few others but any advise on faults or bad experiences would be greatly apreciated...

I have a 140 4stroke susuki with only 100hrs on it and wondering of putting it on a plate would be a option???

This is my first thread on ausfish and Any advise would be awesome thanx guys:)

Mate all i can say is Riptide is awesome, i think thats cause i own one :P, but i cannot fault it an way, my only advise is to ride in a few plate boats of the size you wish to look at ,its the best way, rather than word of mouth see for your self first hand, i bet there are plenty of guys here with many of the boats you would be looking at and would be more than happy to take you for a spin.

Hi Deano

First, welcome to AF, sorry, can't help much with the choosing of the platey
(why plate:-/) but if I was looking I would be looking hard at riptide, great boats, with a good rep on here, also noble are recogognised as good boats.

Don't think I would trade a 6m Haines for a 6 m plate though, what model Haines?

Cheers

The boats you've mentioned have had good feedback, tho i don't have personal experience with them. The 140 suzi i know pretty well, if you're planning on using that for power.
I'd be staying closer to the 6m mark with the 140hp on a moderate v'd plate boat (18-20 deg). It's not the quickest out of the hole 4 stroke... but has good legs.
Know of them on up to 6.5m sportfish's and the like ,,, that go ok with 4 onboard. I'd want trim tabs/permatrim for lift when doing bar work, imo.

Going from a 6m Haines to a 6m Ally? 70k will get you a pretty decent upgrade on the Haines. Thats right into good 233 Formula country. Should even be a few 680 Patriots around for close to that money.

Also worth doing an advanced search of previous threads concerning platies, there lots of interesting reading there.

Also Jeff Webster has done a lot of reviews and written a mag on buying platies. Just google seamedia, you'll find it.

Thanks Vitamin Sea
The Haines is a v19c from sometime in the 70's and its starting to fall apart and it's time for her to go i think

I'm leaning towards plate because hopefully beach luanches will become e regular thing in the future and with a 7m glass boat from what i have heard makes it twice as hard with all the extra weight but i'm definitely keping my options open.:) :)

Thanks Seatime,
I would have ruled out the 140 for a 6.5 plate but i recently saw some footage of a 6.5 riptide cuddy with a 140 zuk and it didnt seem to lack any power although it was glassed out conditions.
thanks for your advice

G'day Deano,

I've got a 6mt Riptide (6.6 loa) now powered withan f200 yam. Originally powered witha 150 efi merc The merc pushed it O.K. but was thirsty, since upping to the f200 haven't looked back. i know Shano had Rippa, a 6.5mt (7.0 loa) and pushed it around with a 140 'zuke - he is a commercial fisho working out of Rainbow, Fraser, 1770 on spanish and wherever the fish are really - so he was pushing some fairly hefty payloads from time to time. After about 18mths he upped it to a f225 before upgrading to 'bella" a 7.4 (7.8 loa) with twin 140 'zukes.

According to shano, he stretched the capacity with the 140 but it was reliable and never let him down, obviously with the 225 he got along at a mi=uch better clip.

Dave's boats love the horsepower. And with over 350 hours in not quite 4 years in all sorts of seas I can't fault mine - it does everything well - no bad manners at all, stable a rest, eats sloppy stuff for lunch - just ask timi boy - he was struggling to keep up recently at 1770 in his 685 cruisecraft outsider in some sloppy stuff.

I can definietly recommend the riptide - only rarely do they come up on the second hand market and mostly because the blokes with them want to upgrade. Don't know of a bad word ever said about them.

As others have said, a lot is horses for courses - have a ride in a few, happy to take you out sometime in mine if that suits for a share of the costs. I fish out of Manly and Mooloolabah if that helps.

cheers

Rhys

deano,
if you keep around the 6m plate mark the suzi should be fine.
my 6m goldstar runs fine with the 140 suzi. 150 / 175 would be nicer, but most days i am running around 24 - 27MPH cruise, which is about all the seas will let you do on an average day. the suzi is running 4600 - 4800 for this.
hope this helps.
BTW goldstars are good things for your research list.

Maybe a bit higher than the budget, but both of these are good value.

hi dont forget to look at bar crusher great sea boat had our 560c now for 18months in all types of seas always feel safe and the ride is good .just put a 150 on the back and now is even better . we can cruise now around 30knots in good seas 25knots in resonable seas .

ps the 620c with a 150 on back is very popular for about 69,000 new
560c with 115 on back is 55,000 new

cheers bevan
