View Full Version : Which 60?

Hey Guys and Gals, I'm having a moment trying to decide what 60hp motor I should be buying. My fishing style is mainly casting lures and usually make a quickish run to the spots I'm fishing then drop the electric for the maneuvering, I find trolling really boring so won't be doing much of that!!!! I've spoke to 3 people who have recommended 3 different motors ... Appreciate opinions from people who have powered up their boats with a 60 recently and why they went with that particular brand ... I'm pretty sure there is no such thing as a bad motor but i am looking at either a 4 stroke or 2 DI 2 Stroke .. save the planet and all that.
Thanks
Matt

Matt
Read this thread, i think it will answer any of your questions! You can sub in any of the 4 strokes for the yami as there pretty much the same thing!

Own an etec 60 hp and love it, ppl may bag it being only a 2 cylinder but it is very smoooth and wouldn't swap it for any other 60 and anyone in the know how of engines realize that twins have great torque due to their big bore. Uses very little 2 stroke oil, and has a fantastic charge rate especially if your like me I run 2 120 ah batteries and many accessories drawing lots of power. Highly recommend it!

Theres only one worth getting F60 Yamaha.

would pretty much put it down to which ever is the cheapest then. the 60's seem to be the same wheather it be 2 or 4 epecially when your considering weight. both would be close on fuel and wouldnt think a 60 di 2 stroke would chew that much oil, which ever is cheaper or has the best dealer would be my pick?

I completly disagree that the only one to get is the f60, I believe that he will be happy no matter what brand he buys. In today's times outboard build quality are all excellant, so when some says that there is only one choice I'm sorry but your full of it.

Haven't been for a ride in a boat with a F60 hey Coco. Just my opinion mate don't raise your blood pressure over it.

WC how many 4 stroke and DFI 60's have you tested/rode in... Just so we can judge your unbiased opinion??
Matt, It's a competative HP bracket best you do your own testing and assessment, I wouldn't buy on someone elses opinion alone.

Will be in a similar situation soon...been renovating over winter/spring after deciding to repower and knowing the new Honda and Suzuki were due out.
A suzi coming off it which was a terrific 2strk but its all about reliability, weight and service for me. Now that u can get various 60 4bangers down around 110kg its a huge advantage for all sorts of obvious reasons. The 4stk suzi's just far too heavy despite my preference for them...yammie 60 4stk agreat motor with a long list of happy mates.
Only a bit of flow coating and electrics left but i;m still undecided too. Leaning toward trying the Honda because its an all new motor and nice big alternator ..but will probably go the Yammie.

Mate I was in the same boat as you (exucse the pun) last year when I purchased a bluefin wildcat for the identical style of fishing you have mentioned. I ended up with a 60hp etec because I thought I got a pretty good deal $22 500 boat motor trailer from logan river marine which was a large factor in why I got it. I had a smaller yamaha 2 stroke before and would recommend Yamaha in any size. To be honest I think most other brands would be quite good as well. Depends on whether you would like a 4 or 2 stroke.
I'm very happy with fuel and oil usage on the e-tec and overall performance, trust me if I had issues with it I would tell you. I try not to get on the bandwagon and bag other brands but if you read enough of this website you'll notice all brands have issues from time to time so put all brands in a hat and draw one out they all have good warranties these days. Try not to dwell to much and get on the water as quickly as possible.
Best of luck mate.

Yeah i have luke...its just made the choice tougher. Probably didnt word that post right but i knew both the suzi and honda were due this spring. Running a 4.8m light glass cuddy usually by myself and dont need nor care about top end speed coz i prefer to enjoy what is around me....more interested in hole shot which is why i held out with 2stks.
Will test out the suzi... a big fan of them and will soon.
Anyone done a comparison of the alternators on these newer 4stks ? So little between them it might even sway me and anyone thats had the 2stk 60's for yrs will know how small they are. Small part of the equation but liots of guys running 2 chunky batteries these days it cant hurt to charge them faster.

Hi MattChew,
All of the cleantech 60's are similarly spec'd and unless you are on the borderline minimum power requirement for your hull, brand shouldn't be much of a factor. Just finished reading the Honda 60 test in F&B and it certainly looks the goods. As you would expect from a newly developed motor, they seem to have refined the ecm to further improve cruise fuel economy and hole shot performance. Have yet to see a direct comparison of all the contenders on the same hull, but at the end of the day who cares about an extra knot or two here or there - they should all do the job.
Go the best deal/warranty/dealership you feel comfortable with.
BTW I am a proud owner of the tried and tested Yam f60c - it is truly a sweet piece of kit. There is no doubt though that the Honda will give it a run for its money even though the rrp is $1500 more than the Yammy.
Deckie - all have alternators in the 17-19 amp range but also produce approx 10 amp charging current at low rpm.
Cheers

Had efi Merc in that size. A very smooth economical motor. I think any four stroke or dfi two would be the go. Since you are not into trolling and using a motor to get to a spot a traditional carby two stroke would also be fine. depends on what you want to spend.

if you're going by alternators then the etec is a lay down misere
but I don't know if i would buy an outboard on how big the alternator is.

tx black runner...its such a popular hp range i'm sure matt and me are just a cpl of hundreds thinking about repowering with the new Honda and Suzi models out.
Will be nice to have that extra current from the larger alternators too so tx for the specs...i dont think any of the older spec 60 or 70 2stks had anything approaching half that...it all helps.
From my way of thinking i'd rather not go the e-tec despite being good kit. Its a compromise i feel and rather just go for 4 stk now as the hole shot issues with smaller 4stks seem to be much improved from what i hear. Probably still cant compete with a 2stk in that regard but i might play with prop's on whichever 4stk i choose coz that might add some grip/torque (tho an expensive way of doing it lol).
As Blusta said there is still a huge argument for the 2stks...the power to weight ratio is still a massive advantage (with the 2stk instant grunt a bonus) and that classic 70 yammie 2stk still weighing 5 kg less but with 10hp more is cheap dependable grunt...i can go up to 90 but just dont want it...an extra 10hp can help offshore as a safety issue but i'm only out there on smooth days anyway....i run a light boat moving around a lot with no more than 2 ever on board (and no grommets to tow around on biscuits). I can go all day on 40 ltrs and still hit 45-48kph with a 60 so its enough for me. The 4 stk trolling speed advantage is important for me though.
Yeah Stewie as mentioned its only a small thing and just one part i havent looked at to be honest...so little between them all i was just wondering if there was any difference in that.
Tx for all your thoughts guys.

i went through the exact same dilema recently.
i ended up choosing the new 60 merc 4s bigfoot, and have nothing but good things to report 60 hrs in.
weight was a big consideration for me. it came down to the yam f60 and merc, and i liked the merc dealer better.

Yamaha 60 has really been the bench mark in the 60 hp range for a fair while now . maybe the new 60 coming out from Honda and Suzuki will give it a run for its money but being considerable dearer to the very proven Yamaha i doubt it will take off until whoever brings out di four stroke or something magical as the Yamaha has pretty well all the whistles as these newer models so why pay more.
the only mistake you could make is buying a standard 2 stroke not because of its ability but poor trade in value.

I have a 60 yamm, 4 stroke. bullet proof I must say, the only issue I have ever had with it was a thermostat issue, but it still got me home no worries. Thermostat was a 5 minute job to change over myself.
I run it on the back of a 4.8 runabout, used to get 30knts out of it loaded, now around 28 due to some knob head that ground a few mm off the tip of the prop driving the boat onto the trailer.
Gets up on the plane whilst loaded in about 4 sec at about 9-10knts.
miser on fuel too, i get around 3km to the ltr.
Mine's an 04 model too, and a bit heavier than the newer ones.

Also have a Yammy 60 and although I haven't experienced many others - I'd not pass it up in a hurry. I run a foil on mine as I have a 5m open tinny and it helps the front end get down quicker so I can see over the front.
It's quite, miserly on fuel, reliable and powerful enough for what I want.
As I said I haven't seen too many others up close but I don't really have need to at the moment.
