Hi.

I recently had my honeymoon in NZ.....I thought I would put up a post so that if anyone was heading that way, this info might be useful. The trout season really kicks off in November.

We spent our 2 weeks in the south part of the south island....its a fantastic place and we had a ball.

The wife (I am still getting used to that) organised a fly casting tutorial and a fishing session.

The fly casting school was imperative, paticulatly considering my previous fly casting experience was pretty much nothing. There is a bit to casting a fly, and I dont think you will enjoy a guided tour without a basic level of ability. Stu at athol was a good teacher and ran us through the basics. Athol is a 45 minute drive south of Queenstown. His website is:

I spent half a day fishing with Greg in Wanaka. Wanaka is a couple of hours north of Queenstown. It's a fantastic place! Greg is a great guide and the rivers he fishes are full of trout - I saw heaps of really big trout. He uses a raft to guide you to some pretty awsome trout areas. The fish I hooked were on wet and dry flys, but he does carry spinning gear. His website is:

To the surf fisherman who use the shakespear etc (plastic) waders, I recommend you try using the waders that fly fisherman use....more expensive, but they are a lot more comfortable!!
