View Full Version : what lights do I need on this trailer

Hi all,
As mentioned on another thread I am bringing a boat in on a trailer from the states. The trailer was built to width specs (ie under 2.5m) but they couldn't source the lights etc (if I was doing it again, I would send them over).

So what I've got coming in a couple of weeks is this:

They have put an amber side light on the front of the guards and a red one on the rear, although I may have to change these if they are not ADR stamped.

My question is what lights do I need on the side? Trailer is 2.39m wide so over the 2.1m clearance light requirement. Are the clearance lights I've got sufficient or will I need to put one (or more?) ambers on the side (of the guards?). I am guessing some amber reflectors as well. The rear red reflectors will be taken care of by the tail light units - how about the white reflector to the front? Where would that go?

I have been reading VSB01 and trying to understand exactly what the requirements are.

One more really dumb question I am sure - looks like I will mount the tail lights on the rear cross member. That is alloy box (4 sided) - a lot of the sealed light units have bolts fixed to them, such that I would have to do the nut up from the other side. How?

thanks!
matt

Not sure on the previous questions but for the highlighted one..drill and tap the box section and put the bolts in with a spring washer on them.

You will need to re-wire the lights ( in USA they use the trailer body for earth, ADR don't allow it). You can put the rear lights on the crossmember by drilling and taping or drill and screws through, whatever is easier or you can weld an alloy angle on the I beam ( this way the light is protected ). Make sure the lights comply for height.
The clearance lights may comply as long as you have an amber light at the front of the guard and the one showing at the rear is amber. If your inspector doesn't like them you can always buy 2 LED lights red/amber (one for each side) and fit them on the top of the guard.
I have a pair you can have for $35 delivered if you want.
You need amber reflectors, just buy stick on, every 1.5 mts not practical on a boat trailer, buy 2 pairs and take them with you , ask the inspector where to fix them.
buy a pair osf white ones as well for the front of the A frame .
I was never asked to use them in the trailers I have done .
I think I can see you have hydraulic brakes, overide is fine for this trailer.http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/C:\Documents and Settings\Jerry\My Documents\My Pictures\Green Trophy

Thanks wrx - I like the idea of the angle on the end of the I beam, although it is an extra hassle finding an alloy welder so I may not bother at this stage. The lights on the guards now are red at the rear, amber to the front. We'll see what the inspector says I guess - an amber reflector on each side and a white one near the front should do it then.
The brakes are hydraulic kodiaks - they will be driven by an override coupler that I will put on. They ran the hydraulic hose up to near the front and left it as shown in the pic below - hoping this will fit an aussie coupler OK and the hose complies!

don't know too much about it but I am learning :)
