A BLAZE that destroyed four luxury boats worth $1 million and threatened several others at a Fremantle dockyard is being treated as suspected arson.
The Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) personnel were called to the Freedom Marine dockyard in Mews Road, Fremantle, about 4.20am (WST) on Tuesday.

At least four boats were destroyed and another was damaged in the blaze, which took firefighters more than an hour to bring under control, a FESA spokeswoman said.

``The boats were on land,'' she said.

``All of them were 30-foot boats or above.

``The estimated damage bill is about $1 million but could be upgraded.''

More than 20 firefighters battled to protect several other million-dollar boats nearby and various buildings at the Freedom Marine dockyard.

Arson investigators are investigating the cause of the blaze.

``The cause is suspicious and the police arson squad are investigating,'' the spokeswoman said.

The Department of Environment and Conservation has been monitoring the air quality at the scene because of concerns about fibreglass burnt in the blaze.
