Hi all,

At the moment I'm trying to decide on what to do.

I have a 1995 Yamaha 50hp 3 carb 2 stroke with 152 hours on the clock.

It still pumps water well, but I think it's probably worth replacing the impeller. The compression was tested as 120 in all cyls 8 months ago and she still seems to run fine, albeit starting to be a little more smokey here and there.

My choices are to give it a service with the help of a mate who's a car mechanic or fork out some precious money and have the local yamaha dealer (Dolphin Marine Maroochydore) give it a goings over.

Does anyone know how much it's likely to cost? Am I that much better off paying a professional to service it?

I know I can do the plugs and gearbox oil myself, as I've done these before... What else should be done?

Any information appreciated. :)

Matt.

Oh, the previous owner said it was serviced right before he purchased it from bayside marine in September 2007 with 60 something hours on the clcok. I did the plugs and gearbox oil at 110 hours (I bought it at 103 hours).

Strictly there is nothing to do over and above the plugs, pump and gear oil, you can also check/replace but definitely clean around them - the thermostat and popets.

2 strokes are very easy going on maintenance but still a professional ear and eye can also be of help.

Consider also trying a decarb before the new plugs go in and then running some ring free or the like.

It's always good to get compression numbers at regular intervals as it will quick smart alert your attention to the beginnings of the problem that kills lots of 2 strokes way early. The procedure is dead simple but needs 2 people usually, my 3/4 year old daughter did the ignition key bit for me a few times and they only cost about $30.

PS don't forget to use new gear drain and fill washers.

First $ to spend is to buy the dealer manual.

Will detail any extra things to look at and give you a better idea

Grease on pivot points and linkages , , softness in fuel lines , greasing prop shaft , checking gearcase seals etc etc.

Get a quote off them and see what the real dollars will cost. That should be a simple easy motor for a dealer to service so won't cost the earth .

It is a expensive motor to replace if you miss something a mechanic would notice.
