Gday I have a 60hp four stroke yammy and i feel it might need a bigger prop. Im just wondering what size prob other guys are running on the same motor with boats like mine makocrafts and Hornet syle hulls. Currently there is a 13 inch on it...

Dear Setthehook. this is the opposite of the dilema that I face. I have a new (24h) Yammy fourstroke 60 and can pull 6000 rpm at full throttle with only myself onboard. The prop is the same i.e. 13". I think I may need to drop an inch( I know all of us would not like to loose an inch). I will go to the Brisbane boat show and talk to Mr Solas who has excelled in the past. P.S. what revs. are you pulling? Cheers Winston.

I find up too about 4500 im very grunty and its great after that i seem to get up to around 5500 and it feels like its over reving for the the amount of push force. Its not a problem and im not sure if i really need a bigger prop. Can do around 55kms no problem just feels it could do alot more for the revs it puts out.....

The most important thing is to ensure rpm's are within spec. 5500 WOT is a good number (should be between 5000-6000) and a balance between economy/performance and will ensure motor is not labouring.

Of course the faster you go, drag increases exponentially, so things like biminis have a significant effect.

I get about 30knots from my 60 4st/std 13in pitch prop on a 460 with bimini.

What type of boat is it setthehook?
Cheers

440 makocraft ETT. No bimini and pretty streamline... Sounds like you get the same speed as im getting with the same prop.

Most problems with the 60hp yamaha's is that you probably have a 10 3/8x13p. THAT'S YOUR PROBLEM. You need to get a 11 3/8x12p if your pulling 6000rpm with the 13p. The diameter is to small for a 60hp engine. Makocraft or hornet style boats are quite heavy and need diameter. If you change your prop back to the normal diameter eg 11 5/8, 11 3/8 & 11 1/8, a 40-60hp should be running, that will solve the problem of the feeling of revs with no push. Also i would be checking the engine height. The higher the better. At full throttle normal trim make sure the cavatation plate is just skimming under the water. If it looks like it might be a 1 inch or so under the water you can raise the engine on the transom. A 60hp Yamaha 4 stroke should be running to 5700-5800max rpm.

The std prop on the yammie 60 is 11-1/8"x13p. I also use an 11-3/8"x12p for heavier loads and a high bimini and clears. It makes a big difference in this scenario and revs out to 5750 and doesn't ventilate as much. The 13p is a good spare and for cruise speed.

Exactly what I have done...took off my standard 13 and put on a Solas 12 inch Stainless..WOT revs went 5200 to 5600 and top speed went 49kph to 45kph on a Seascape Kingfisher 4.82 plate built hull...quite heavy. The 12" Solas stainless makes it perform much better all round. Really need to be doing 5600-5800 WOT I think....higher better but 5600 OK according to my mechanic.

I have just repowered a rogue 14ft with a 2010 yam 60hp 4st. Very happy with the power but it will only rev out to 5400.
Running a 11 3/8x13p alloy prop. Brand new prop. But takes ages for the hull to get on the plane. What would be a better option?

Go down in pitch or up in dia?
Cav plate sit good in the water when planing. I have thought that even a Cav plate fin like a permatrim might help to get on the plane?

Cheers damo.
