I am starting to wonder if bringing a boat back from the US is going to be worth all the effort and as such have done a few searches back home to see how the used market is going.

I have always liked the Randell boats built in WA and am wondering if anybody has any feedback on something like this;

http://boatpoint.com.au/boats-for-sale/details.aspx?R=3084555

Seems to be in great condition with a newer diesel engine that has more power than the regular 165hp Volvos fitted to these boats and the price isn't too bad either.

What do these things ride like? Speed, range, economy etc. with that engine?

Are their numbers listed realistic? "Cruise @ 22 Knots @ 33L/H WOT 28Knots "

How much diesel would she hold?

Thoughts?

Oh and no need to worry about discussing sterndrive maintenance issues with boats kept in the water. I know all about that and this would be kept on a cradle out of the water.

Don't know anything about the hull (looks like a Bertram copy) however I would say the fuel economy quoted is accurate. Having looked at heaps of boats before getting mine I found the rule of thumb for diesel economy is for every 100 hp you are using you will burn around 15 litres per hour. One way to work it out is to find the cruise rpm they run the engine at , then look at the power curves for the engine on the volvo penta website.

I've run around in a few Randall's. Namely a 26, 28, 32. Get a 28 instead of the 26 as they have a flush deck.

This is a good rule of thumb. I will keep it in mind when looking. Also I don't think the Randell hull is a Bertram copy. I might be wrong, but I know they were designed in WA and I think they might be slightly narrower for their length. Similar layout though I agree.

In reference to the 'flush deck' do you mean in the cockpit there is no engine box protruding above deck level?

I am starting to wonder if bringing a boat back from the US is going to be worth all the effort...........
My doubts have increased exponentially now after all of the QLD Transport Dept reading I have been doing with respect to towing an oversize boat.

I might have to get serious about looking for a larger diesel boat now.

Rat Catcher, we have worked out that the permit is obtainable so if you want to trailer oversize you can.

Alternately, get a larger boat and store it at a marina on a slip trailer (if they have provision for dry storage). That way you don't have the issue of antifouling and all the other issues that go with marna berthing and you ring ahead and your boat is in the water ready to go when you arrive.

cheers

Yeah except I am still stuck with the special restrictions on the approaches to Rosslyn Bay that mean I need a pilot vehicle so it is still a no-go for me. Unfortunately.

Looking at something like these now;

or

http://www.boattrader.com/listing/2004-Luhrs-Open-Express---Tower--Genset-95223024

Both 28' twin diesel express style boats for around 100k. If I don't have to buy a Chevy Silverado as a tow vehicle I could spend the extra money to step up to one of these, however am still concerned about the extra marina costs.

Anyway still toying with all ideas, but leaning away from the overwidth trailering situation.

Oh and Keppel Bay Marina doesn't do dry-storage. You have to get your name on the waiting list at CCYC (Capricornia Cruising Yacht Club) and from what I have heard, wait for somebody to die!

Hi Rat catcher,

I was just reading your post, as I am also doing the exercise on an import. I'm looking at a 21ft Trophy, from what you have researched would the be any special permits et applicable to the size?

Cheers

It depends a lot on where you live and where you plan on trailering the boat. Have a read through the thread I started a couple of days ago title 'QLD Towing Laws'. Should be a real eye opener.
