Hi, I am thinking of upgrading my boat within the year and was wondering what an 18ft would weigh roughly (b,m,t). My 4x4 is rated to 1500kg so if I have to update the truck I'd rather do that first than buy both at the same time. I'd be looking at either fiberglass or alluminum as I have a 90 opti that I'd like to keep.

Thanks.

You're going to be up near the 2000kg with a 5.5metre boat, motor, trailer, fuel, anchors, eskies etc. Have a look at a couple of dealer packages, ring them up and ask them what the total payload is. It's pretty safe to say you will need a 4 x 4 with a higher towing capacity.

Cheers

Hi There,
You will be over the 1500kg limit. Once you load up with fuel, rods, reels and a few goodies, you will be over that weight. Sorry but been down that track before.

We have a 5.4 meter Quintrex with a 115HP 4 stroke merc on a Sealink trailer. 1250Kgs dry, add 100Kg for full tank of fuel, about 20Kg for safety gear and anchor etc plus whatever you stack in it.

It tows behind a 2.5 Subaru Outback relatively comfortably with four adult size people in the car and bags for weekend away. The Subaru is rated to 1500Kgs, tow ball weight is the limiting factor with this vehicle, and while we are slightly over (shhh don't tell anyone) we avoid loading the car heavily to ensure stability.

Cheers

You should come under 1.5T with a single axle trailer. My 5.4m fiberglass boat weighs 1.24T and that's with an auxillary motor, some fuel and an aluminium hardtop.

a decent boat is going to be 2 tonnes, and they are all different.

you have to specifically research each boat model to determine the wieghts

I have an 18 foot fibreglass boat (5.5meters). The weights are as follows hull approx 600kgs, motor 115 4 stroke approx 180kgs, dual batteries approx 50kgs, trailer approx 400kgs (singel axle). Prior to adding anything else total approx weight is 1230kgs. The trailer is rated to 1.5 tonne. I tow with a commodore.

at a guess Telwater is Australia's biggest seller of Tinnies.
The link below shows their lightest Braked trailer &
has a list of the various models this trailer is packaged with.

My Surtees Workmate 5.5 weighs 1200kg (actual on he weighbridge) with full tank of fuel and usual gear, in ready to fish mode. Add in eskies and any extra tackle boxes etc and its still well under 1500kg. Note that my single axle trailer (rated 1490kg) is a clever Kiwi design that makes it around 100kg lighter than the equivalent local made Redco/Dunbier etc.

5.85 m (18'6") Swiftcraft Dominator 1550 Kg on tandem fully rollered trailer with twin 60hp mercs, around 25 litres of fuel, all anchors and safety gear. Would have dropped 20kg when I fitted the F115. BTW, I bought that on a single axle trailer rated at 1200kg. :o I knew it would go around 1500, used that as a bargaining chip. Trailer was still in as new nick, so I contacted the manufacturer about uprating, and their engineer was happy to issue a new VIN plate if I uprated to tandem using OEM gear from them. It was all bolt-on, straightforward process. And cost almost $1700.

Errr... 5.85m = 19ft and about 4". Lot bigger than an 18 footer.

Sorry, 5.65 for the Mk11, hence 18'6". But it was said that if they hadn't squared the nose of in that distinctive manner, they would have been a 20 footer--yes, they are a big 18'6.

my mates have a quintrex 5.3m bowrider the hull weighs somewhere around 600kg (ive forgotten) its printed on the serial number sticker, all up with a 115hp yamaha and trailer its about 1200kg-1250kg on a single axle braked trailer

i think in NSW we go by a % of car weight to towable load, some makers like hayman and reese HD tow bars will handle a little more for instance the older model commodores were rated to i think 1200-1300kg but u had the option of a hayman and reese HD tow bar 2100kg, maybe worth checking it out for your current car they have it all on there web site

... i think in NSW we go by a % of car weight to towable load...A looong time ago gazza, but not any more.

In 1989 Australian Design Rules (ADR’s) were introduced which affect the construction (and import regulations etc) of all things automotive, including any Capacity Ratings of vehicles including towing limits, which are set by the manufacturer, or possibly the importer if the manufacturer has not specified such.

There were probably a few years grace, but compliance of these ‘Rules’ has been required by Law for a very long time.

In late 1998, agreement was finally reached by all State Ministers of Transport to implement National towing regulations. NSW's tow limit of 150% of the vehicle mass (or whatever it was), went out the window at this time.

Bay local, its just occurred to me to ask - what sort of 4x4 do you have that is rated to only 1500kgs? It must be a small one? Suzuki..... older Rav4? Because that does seem a low towable weight for even a smallish 4x4 or SUV??
