Mate most 40hp 2-bangers are in the range of 70-80kg. Might be a bit heavy for a 3.8m I suspect, and probably a little overkill. A 25-30hp would probably be ideal, although some of these weight just as much too. What is the boat rated for?

cheers B/T, dont have the tinny as yet, just picked up the 40hp, chasing a small tinny for a bush boat, dont really want to go much bigger than a 3.8m

Found a reference at 88kg, I think the 25/30hp is near 55kg so it's a big jump up. Possibly go to town and build a floatation pod either side of the engine to keep the overall length down?

cheers fnq

I got a 2000 40hp johno, 2 cylinder , 2 banger with electric trim and start, weighs in at 84kg's, sitting on a 3.6m glass runabout! I done all the transome work myself, raised and strengthened with heaps of layers of glass and all, she sits a tad low in the water at the back while at a standstill but go's great, not an overall fast boat due to the heavy hull, is used only for estuary and river fishing, wouldnt dare take it outside due to the low side's, hasnt faulted me in the 1 and a half years since I built it, having fun with it but cant wait to get a bigger boat!
From memory I was trying to buy a 40hp tohatsu with the same extras but that motor came in at 59 - 65 kg's, was a 2 cylinder as well but they stopped making them and went to the 3 cyl! I had it lined up to buy but wasnt fast enough and missed out by a few day's!
