Just some info required guys..............

I have a boat (17' 1/2 cab) and am thinking about going to moreton for a week or so for a bit of a holiday late August. Was thinking of going by boat and just camping on the beach north of Tangalooma or there abouts. More or less, just to get away from things for a break and do a bit of fishing

Question 1...Is it possible?
Question 2... Do you need a permit?
Question 3 ... Can you get fuel on Moreton, if the need arose?
Question 5 ... Is any area better than others..

Thanks in advance

I've not done it, but pretty certain you can. There are a few campgrounds/campsites on the western side which would be suitable, including some near the wrecks although those ones would be a fair way from the boat.
No fuel on the island anymore. Maybe that will change soon.

hey
i camp on moreton almost every christmas and travel by boat, take plenty of spare fuel, 20l containers or around that size.

you do need a permit as far as i can remember, and theres camp sites near the wrecks north of tangalooma, or you can camp south of tanga near shark spit, were ever you go the anchorages are pretty safe and you can drop the pick basically infront of your camp. although if a moderate to strong westerly wind came up i would prefer to have my boat moored in behind the safety of the wrecks.

we also usually take over a seperate mooring rope and place it when we get there with a nice big lump of chain and good anchor, this prevents you from disturbing your anchor and seems to help prevent the chance of dragging during the night which is not good especially when you have to swim for it in the dark (talking with prior experience) :'(

thats about it, hope this helps and i hope you have a good trip with plenty of fish to show for it

New poster, long time lurker. Thanks to the guys on this forum who inspired confidence to do so, on Saturday morning 2 dads 2 boys loaded up the Haines Signature 1800S (yep a skiboat - 5.4m or 18'), booked our camping permits, and left Yeronga boat ramp to go to The Wrecks campground.

To your questions:
Yes it is possible
Yes - EPA website has plenty of information (http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/parks_and_forests/find_a_park_or_forest/moreton_island_national_park_and_recreation_area/#camping_and_accommodation)
No fuel for sale (http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/parks_and_forests/find_a_park_or_forest/moreton_island_national_park_and_recreation_area/#gen4)
I would recommend the Wrecks Campground if it's your first tripApart from the fact we didn't move the boat back down the beach as the tide went down so spent a bit longer on Moreton than anticipated :), a great weekend was had. The key learnings:
Keeping warm - http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/showthread.php?t=150955
Use 2 anchors - http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/showpost.php?p=539368&postcount=16
The Wrecks provide some protection from bigger waves, although you can get quite strong currents (see 2. above)
Enjoy!!If your boat has inboard fuel tanks then that makes life a lot easier - methinks we went through around 65 litres for around 2 hours "key on" time with average speed around 30 mph over to Moreton and 33 mph coming home (Merc 150 EFI).
