View Full Version : Awesome Hutchies Thurs 25/06/09 – Kingies & AJs galore

Got out with the boys (magic father & sons sess) at daybreak to northern end of Hutchies swarming with Kingies & AJs (+grey suits) with only one other boat in sight. 8-) Conditions slight lumpy northerly at first then smoothed out. Water temp 20-21 & fair run in tide though got great 3-4 km/hr SE drift with para-anchor.

Used knife jigs & large Gulp plastics. After losing several jigs ($$$ :'( ) jiggled large metal slugs with similar results.

By the way, sharks DO take large knife jigs :o– dragged a fat 5-6 footer boat side to retrieve jig, but thought better of it. :-/ See pic of another mangled jig.

Kept a few Kingies & one AJ that was dead on arrival – had been swallowed, chewed & scaled by something obviously quit large & not shark – Cod perhaps?? Others released to fight another day – lots unintentionally. Left them still chewing strong around mid-day.
The Snap & Maori Cod were by-catch. ;D;D

PS: a big thank you to FrankOO (who else?) for the tuition, tips & marks ... “any moment now”. ;);)

Thanks for the feedback guys - it WAS a ton of fun - to do it with your sons is something extra special.

Had some Kingy & AJ yesterday for the first time - man, that sh!t is good :o :o .
Kingy = 7/10 & AJ not far behind - mind you we are very particular about bleeding & chilling fish asap. Wishing now we had not "released" so many, though dont know how well they freeze ???? - any thoughts /suggestions please?

Have also posted another pic of Dan's bent jig - it was bent AND broken - he had a fish up to about 10 metres when it got slammed by a BIG toothy - they jaw power of these things is amazing :o :o .

Am definitely going for this jigging caper again - despite it seems a little expansive $$$$ :'( :'( . Double & treble hook-ups are unforgettable.

Hi Mal,

Looks like your plan worked. Not sure about using the Sea Anchor for a landing net though.

Good to see you getting amongst them mate well done.

Hi Mal,

Looks like your plan worked.

Hey Frank / "any moment now"

Mate, you didn't warn me that sharks take knife jigs. :( :(

The fun of this caper is everything you said it would be. Next time we might crack some bigger ones .... like the tiddlers you get. ;D ;D

Thanks again for the tuition, advice etc - you're a legend.
