hi all planning a new rod thinking of a samurai nv8 with the fuji vss split handle kit
Want to put a 5000 stella on it for sp out the reef for coral trout and the likes maybe a few snapper in the colder months.
starting to think the grips and winch maybe a bit small any ideas would be much appreciated..

Came across the same problem when building a heavier spin rod. I Originally purchased a VSS 17 reel seat with spilt grips. Once I lined them up along the blank the grips looked a bit small and out of proportion. What I ended up doing was this:
- Grabbed a deluxe fuji spinning seat (17)
- Removed the front Hood of the reel seat and replaced it with a Fuji KPSD Quick Lock reel seat Locking nut, and matching EVA foregrip
-I then selected a couple of shaped EVA grips for the split grip.
The thing I like about this way is you can choose what ever length EVA grips which you find comfortable and in proportion to the size of the blank you are using.
Using a conventinal reel seat like this set up may also accommodate your 5000 spinning reel a little better than the VSS reel seat.
I've posted a few pics of the end result so you can get an idea of how it looks once on the blank. Hope this helps.
Cheers

Forgot to mention the EVA foregrip for the KPSD can be a little hard to find , ended up having to get it from the USA.
Hi, heres a pic of my NV8 that a mate built.. thought it may be of interest to you. I am not a huge fan of the split grip thing (seems like a wank if you ask me) , they dont sit well in rod holders either.

hardie355,
I have just built a rod using the VSS17 seat with matching EVA grips and it does work well. If I did it again I wouldn't quick lock hood as I prefer the foregrip to be a bit longer.
A standard lock ring and custom foregrip with the VSS seat and rear grip would be better.
I use this with a SOL4000 and it fits nicely, I wouldn't want to use a larger reel though.
