View Full Version : Ideal Jack for Heavy Rig

I drive a 1.8t landrover and tow a 900kg fiberglass boat rig on a single axle trailer.

I do not have a jack for either and need to get one.

I am thinking of being able to use one jack for both units.

Can you please recommend a good quality brand?

The weights you're talking about isn't much at all(in relation to jacks). Your local tool shop will have a 3, 5 or 6 tonne hydraulic jack for under $100.00. Spend any more than that and you're wasting your money.
Just keep a piece of plate/breadboard/timber to use as a base plate.

thanks - any brand in particular?

any quirks that people do not like in certain jacks (such as clearance, usability, etc)?

make sure the jack is not too big (as in tall) when all the way down, most trailers are hard to find a place that you can jack up on, like under the frame, you run out of travel before the wheel is off the ground, and the jack is too tall to fit under the axle, as mentioned, the weights are not an issue, even the cheapest hydraulic jack will do the job, but the more expensive ones seem to be much more stable and reliable. I had a shitty little one from a discount auto store, and unless you had it upright, (even when not in use) it leaked oil , next to useless, so I chucked it away and scored a good one from a mate who was having a garage clean out, works a treat, never leaks and is about 5 tonne capacity, and about half the size of the cheapo one.

As Daz says, got look for a screw type Nissan jack, totally indestructible (toyota landcruiser ones are almost as good).

If you must opt for Hydraulic types you will find most of the gear on the market is out of china or india and quality accross the board is about the same. Hydraulics are still good but sooner or later they will fail. A screw type will not unless you let it rust out internally.

Thanks tunaticer.

I now have small hyd jack.

Can anyone suggest where I mount the jack to gain wheel lift before I reach max travel?

I remember lifting this rig on a jack 3 years ago and the trailer frame lifted / tilted alot before the actual wheel lifted off the ground.

There must be a magical point underneath where the wheel can lift without too much trailer frame lift...?

Any ideas?

G'day,

Which Land Rover weighs just 1.8 tonne?

Is 900kg the weight of boat, motor trailer? Seems light.

LR Disco 1995 V8 petrol 3.8L 1.8t
Haines Hunter 1989 SLR 5.4m Hull 500kg (dry)
Johnson 1989 110HP Motor 100kg
Dunbier Trailer 100kg
fuel in boat + gear 200kg

In The disco the jack sits behind the lhs headlight (same spot as the battery but the other side), if you havew dual batteries it can go under your passenger seat.

Thanks Blaze.

I am chasing mounting points to locate this jack underneath the boat trailer so I can raise the trailer wheel off the ground to change the wheel bearings.

If I jack the rig up on the axle, the whole axle goes through the suspension travel range before the wheel is lifted.

Can anyone suggest where I mount the jack to gain wheel lift before I reach max travel?

Masada bottle jacks (japan made) are about as good as you can get. They are distributed by Karmot. Cheap jacks are very average, lots of faulty ones.
