Hey all,

After a trip out to the reef over the weekend we got our anchor jamed and after a lot of mucking around trying to free it we ended up breaking about 20m off the bottom. We carry a spare anchor so the day wasn't ruined but we now need to look at getting a new rope as the old one is too short. Just after people's oppinion on where is the best (value for money) place to get anchor rope from. Also what are some people's oppinion on the size of the rope, our boat is a 5.8m plate sportsfish.. whole rig fully loaded would weigh about 1.5 ton.. and we generaly fish in reefy grounds with the odd bit of red fishing in deeper water... any help would be greatly aprectiated.

Cheers,
Nidrac.

best place to buy rope is any of the shops that supply pro fishermen, usualy half the price and they have a good range in stock, just get the same size as you had before if it was OK.

How was your anchor attached to the rope as there are ways to limit the number of lost anchors??

Noelm,
do you know the names of any of these places around the townsville area or any that might have an online store? that was my first thought but i haven't beeen able to track any down...

Finga,
Nah nothing in partucular just a stainless shackle on either end of a 5m length of chain with the reef pick attached. Been using that setup for about 5 years in the last two boats and never had a problem. This is the first one we've lost...

Cheers, Nidrac.

I would get 10mm or 12mm silver rope, I think you will find that Bullivants will be the cheapest.

silver rope is nice, very soft and pliable, you can use Polyethylene, but it is very slippery and stiff, but quite a bit cheaper, then again, you only buy it every now and then, so why skimp? (unless you are a stinge like me!)

If you want the cheapest prices on silver rope contact A.T.S. ropes they supply the commercial guy's and are over 50% cheaper than everywhere and deliver for stuff all just google them and ring for a quote.

Hi, Nidrac,

I had the same problem as you when I first moved up north. I was using 8mm silver rope, and used to lose an anchor and chain every trip or so, due to the anchor not coming off, and the rope breaking.

I now use a very light 3/8 in reef pick, 3 metres of 8mm chain with 120 metres of 10mm silver rope, and have lost only one anchor in three years.
