Just a "heads up" that the current Queensland Recreational Boating and Fishing Guide that is available free at marine shops is out of date in relation to its pages on size and take and possession limits.

This is the publication to which I refer. I picked up one at a boat dealer this afternoon and it was dated December 2008, Issue 1...

I actually went into the marine dealer to buy one of these ...

When I got home, I showed my wife both publications and she decided to check the accuracy of the bought chart against the official government publication. She discovered that there are lots of discrepancies between the bought guide and the free book so I checked both against the rules shown on the Qld Fisheries website and that proved that the bought guide is accurate and the free book is not.

Whew! A bloke could be caught out following the official book!

BTW, I went to buy the guide because I saw someone's comment in these pages that it was pretty good. This was after I had been fishing on Friday and on landing a tuskie, I was suddenly taken with a fear that I may not know the current regulations since I had not done much fishing for a while.

As it turns out, I was correct to be concerned as the several fish measuring stickers and rulers that I had on the boat were not consistent in relation to the take size of tuskies so naturally, I observed the most conservative guides that I had on the boat at the time.

Finally, I have to say that the bought guide is pretty good. It costs about $9 which might seem a lot for a laminated double sided pictorial tabulation of fish and their size and take rules but it does have a lot of info on it so I am quite pleased with it.

Other little fish identification books on my boat do not like being handled with wet hands and do not contain the rules either so this is quite a useful compact source of fish ID and rules info.

The question is,,, why are these books still available to the public. They should be tossed out.

Hey Charleville,

Where did you end up getting the laminated guide from? I could use one of those!

Leisure Marine at Capalaba.

That is also where I got the official book from.

This is what confuses me ...

Page 30 (Marine Queensland, Marine Directory 2009),

Open water ... All Boats PFD 1 BUT for PWC PFD type 2,
Can someone explain, it doesn't make sense to me? :-/

Then have a look at the MSQ site and see what is not mandatory but recommended,

Who has the legislation correct???:P

Case of "too many chiefs and not enough indians". Sorry CHIEF!;D

I can remember expecting all sorts of things to be hurried along (fish review wise) because the new tide book was due out and I expected the new regs should be in the new government tide book......NUP

The new tide book and the new boating and fishing guide were issued KNOWING FULL WELL that information in the would be outdated very early in the year.

The commercial publishers were also caught on the hop having to make anotations in their books about "proposed changes"

OH have a look at the front of all these books too......there is a disclaimer in them that states that the information should not be reliedupon and refeers the reader to the varuiuos legeslation.

The incompetence or is it just blind ignorance / arogance of the government departments is just gob smacking regarding these issues.

Surely they can get their act together so that all the changes are made prior to publishing these guides that the genearl public rely upon..... or just wait till next year.>:(

cheers
