was told by many people would be wasting my time trying to build some rocket launcher rod holders my self ....
so much for there opinion , first day at it and nearly complete at a cost of $170:)
so moral of the story is if you think you can ? you really can save money as was quoted over $1200:o for virtually the same thing

there only $190...

so add your $170 then add up how many hours you spent doing it then times that by what you get paid per hour and your blown way past $190 ow and add the effort hehe.

For the money it looks like it will be very strong, unlike the Bias one quoted at $189.00

I would take the home made job every time over the flimsy one

Cheers

The BIAS ones are bolt / screw together ones with plastic ends, not strong welded ones. You get what you pay for. ::)

Look good, what tube are you using? Leigh

they look good mate! i recently made mine up out of ally and got them powdercoated. Doing it yourself is definitely the way to go if you have the skills and contacts ;) May I make one suggestion tough based on what ive just done? If you dont wamt your reels scratched up get yourself some of the nylon inserts. They come in either 50mm ID or 2" ID. at about $4 each they aremt cheap for what they are but they do the job well and make the rockets look the ducks nuts! :)

Cheers,
Trav

these are the ones Bias and Whitworths have them

make sure the weld on the rodholders is well done, there is a lot of weight/load on them when a heavy reel get pounded downwards when under way, seen plenty come off over the years.

stinky-stabi
01-07-2009, 06:38 PM
yes noelm i have had them welded well so hope all is good

trilogy i went and purchase one of those today but did not fit as the pipe is a little to thick so i chiesled the inner out an the out fits above so have to chase around to find something to suit ,,trip to clark rubber etc

stinky-stabi

does anybody know of anything else that will fit over these as those rod inserts do not fit so i used some thimbles off a large poly pipe but when fitted the rods dont fit in side ,,,i used 50od with 42 id so might need to re fit smaller wall pipe??

Maybe an idea to make sure you have a stern light as well, to give you an all round white combination, as the rod hlders appear to hide the light.
I have a great one on the back of my bait board, that is meant for the job.

Could you turn the oustside of those suckers down a bit in the lathe so they'll fit in??

Could you turn the oustside of those suckers down a bit in the lathe so they'll fit in??

finger that was a thought as my neighbour has a lathe in his shed (mini engineering shop) but didnt want to grind them off so have got some large rings out of 75mm poly pipe and will put them on the out side and has a lip so will sit 5mm high of the tube ...but plan B is like you said in to the lathe .....

dnej ihave purchased a metre long waterproof led strip light that will sit on the rear rail wich will be seen as it light up the whole boat ...you can purchase them of e bay .i got mine for one cent plus 12.99 postage..same thing in oz was 150 ...big saving in money and battery power, all lights are led bar the two cat spotties at 55w each

timddo, thanx m8

trilogy i purchased one of those but did not fit as my piping is to thick walled

catweb , you got it in one m8.....pmsl(piss me self laughn)

:-/:-X

I won't go into how wrong that theory is, but at the very least you should consider TIG just for the sake of time required to get your bars cleaned up & polished.
Looks good so far, but your fun has only just begun ;-)

yes owen i know nothing about welding and am the first to admitt that ,, the last lot were tig welded, and must say was better than me other m8s mig welds. my work is done as i will not be polishing or powder coating and happy just too spray a bit of inox etc to keep in half decent condition...tryed them out today was roughas gutz outwide and still in one piece(got fully soaked by nice one over the screen).lolol
