I have a 13'6 rod that i would like to change from a low mount to a mid mount for a spin reel. Is it a hard job or relatively easy for a novice and what would be needed. I have never done any rod building or mods so any advice is welcome.
I figure i can pull the grips off and the reel seat back to the blank, can i reuse the reel seat or will it be stuffed ( is there any easy way to do this ). I would then leave the bottom of the blank bare or use a heat shrink or cork wrap under the reel seat, any suggestions. Also would i have to change the first guide or not.
Cheers

The easiest way is to take off the but cap and slip in an extension fitted with preferred grip already attached. You can get tricky like I did on my FSU4120G and cut the blank below the reel seat and fit a full extension made up with skeleton grips. It looks neater;D

The only problem with that is that it would make the rod too long for me. Nice and easy idea for shorter rods though. Cheers

If the extra length is an issue then I would be keeping it as is or selling it and buying the components to build it as you want it. Removing grips and reel seats is opening up a whole world of hurt that would be best avoided

Yeh, try using your spin reel on it 'as is', personally for surf fishing I much prefer to use spinning reels mounted in the low position, many South African anglers use overhead reels in the low position, tho' I'm bu$$ered if I can figure out how.
Cheers.

Thanks guys. I might just leave it if its too hard. Dont know anything about this sort of thing and thought it may be easy but i am not ready to stuff the rod up. I will just keep using it as is and deal with it. Thanks again.

maybe you can just bind a fuji plate real seat in the position that you want and have a multi purpose rod.no need to take off the old one.easy fix. peter

Cheers Peter will have a close look at that. I wouldnt mind it being multi purpose. I am guessing it would just require cutting back part of the eva grip and like you said binding a plate reel seat on. Thanks again
Hi Cameron,
That would be the quickest way to do it but it would make the rod way too long for me.
