Hi there,

I own an 80's model Quintrex 3.4 tinnie which has a few dodgy coats of paint on it from the previous owner so am wanting to paint it. I have had a bit of alook at a few previous posts on here regarding this topic but am after a few other bits of info such as what is a good nozzle to apply with (i have the compressor but would need to get nozzle), as the hull is old am not going to go all out and do 2pak so have decided on enamel so how much do i need and is it a particular kind or just normal enamel? Do i need to add hardeners? How much of the original paint do i need to get off or is it similar to surface prep for walls in that just need to ensure a smooth surface? Whats this etching stuff all about?

Any help would be much appreciated so thanks in advance

Cheers
Craig

while I am not a spray painter, I have taken part in a few Ally resprays (including my own Cat years ago) etch primer is applied to the aluminium surface as an "undercoat" as the name implies, it etches the surface and gives a compatible surface for the top coats to adhere to, if you want a good job, a specialist sand balster will strip off the old paint in a jiffy, but it needs to be done by someone who knows, normal old sandblasting will chew a hole in the metal or distort it in a jiffy! you could also use paint stripper, but make sure you get an alloy compatible one, then it is just a job of painting it as you would anything else.
