I have got a couple of fishing mates staying with me for a while so we have out and about from Mooloolaba. The week did not start too well as their plane was delayed and we missed a good weather day on Monday.
Tuesday we cruised the ocean, lots of small stuff as previously reported.
Wednesday things bucked up, we found a good amount of slimies and yakkas then headed to the Hards to try for a marlin. We had been drifting for only 5 minutes when Pete got the first run and after a spirited fight we released a lively little black of about 30 kg. Shortly afterwards another rod went off and the lads looked at it for a few seconds before Pete grabbed it (you have got to be quicker Nev!) unfortunately the line popped under light drag. One crushed bait and a short strike trolling towards home was the only other action, apart from a rolling ride in 20 knots SE and rain.
Thursday, we decided to try drifting the bait grounds for marlin, plenty of bait again but no bites. We then moved inshore to a bit of reefy ground anchored, berleyed, and float fished slimies, Nev had a nice 12 kg spaniard then Pete got a screamer which fought dirty under the boat and amazed us all by turning out to be a 26 kg yellowfin, great eating by the way.
We are all a bit battered and bruised by a couple of hard days on the water so are taking the weekend off, hopefully to start again early next week.
