To hard to reply on that info? Did it do all it's hours quickly then not used for along time or has it had 40 use per year for the last ten years? How was it looked after , flushed well? I think the ten years is far more of a problem than the 400 hrs! A 2 year old motor with 1000hrs would on balance still be a great motor , but a 10 year old motor with only 100 hrs may be a dog!

Is it an injected or carby motor?

The 400 hours is neither here nor there. Unless the motor has issues,or he is going to upgrade to a new technology/fuel efficient engine (e-tec or fourstroke) he may as well keep what he has.

My outboard, a meagre 1995 Yamaha 50hp, is quite old and has 140 hours on it. (only 103 hours when I bought it last October)... Not a dog at all.

I don't think age or hours are an accurate representation of any engine...

But i could have been!!!

Please reread my post i said " depends on how it was treated eg flushed well" If you had a 1 year old motor that didn't get much tlc but did get serviced and had done 1000 hrs, it would probably still be ok but if it was 10 year old with 100hrs up and not looked after it would be rooted! Get the point, age can definatly be an issue or not be an issue!;) I would be happier buying a 2 year old motor with 600hrs on the clock than a 10 year old motor with 100 hrs on the clock any day!

I had one of those - 4 cyl ocean runner?

Good, simple reliable enough.

I'd get the compression checked and make sure #4 is still within tolerance (they had a recall for water getting into that piston)

If that's all o.k. along with the other basics - i'd run it till it dies (many more years) unless I wanted a new tech motor as others have mentioned.

as long as they're well looked after there's no reason why an outboard shouldn't get three times those hours on it.

Thanks for the reply, the motor has nothing wrong with it, runs great just looking at better fuel economy etc + i would not get much for it with 400+ hrs on it.

thanks sam...

Dont think the sums will stack up too well in favour of a new motor when you do the sums on being reimbursed on the cost of a new motor by the fuel cost savings between the current motor and a new tech one with an average of 40 hours use per year...::)...
