View Full Version : Haines Hunter Tinnie?

Found a boat advertised online as a 4.3m Haines Hunter Tinnie.
Did Haines actually ever make a 'tinnie'? And were they any good? And when they were produced? The one bad photo makes it look like a reasonably recent (ie not 80's) hull design.
This appears to be a very cheap boat, and might be an option to get us out on the water with a bunch of my boat budget left over to outfit it with some decent gear, and /or replace the engine.

Cheers!

I had a 15 foot haines tinny....vintage early 80s...mine was bought in 82....they made a center cons and a runabout...mine was a runabout....it leaked a bit..i had a 50 jono on the back, ran it all around the bay even out to flinders a few times..she wasnt too bad in teh water...a bit shallow on the sides...and a bit wet...just give it a real good look over, mine had a fair bit a corro in the back esp...the timber with carpet floor trapped water and salt hence the corro...but if she is in good nick...i only got rid of mine 3 years ago...in that time i had a lot of use out of her....(post the pic incase it was mine)

Like I said, this one's got a pretty low asking price on it. Well, below my budget, but I'm not finding too many 14ft tinnies at a reasonable price right now (and this cash is burning a hole in my pocket!)

Here's the pic. Trailer seems to have some issues.
What vintage would you guess the engine to be? Also, I'm guessing that a 25 is a little on the underpowered size?

I didnt know that they built one that size...id only ever seen the 15 and 17 footers....Mine had a full width outboard well and thats where most of the problem was with corosion....but hay its worth a look at, as i said mine handled pretty well....i think you would get away with the 25hp too...

By the way, yep thats teh same hull design..so it would be 81-82 ish in age...not sure about the outboard...

So, what would one expect to pay for such a vessel?
Just trying to get an idea of value.
I know it's tough with nothing but a single photo.
Oh, the ad description:
"4.3m Haines Hunter tinnie 25hp Mariner. Boat registered until Nov 09, Tilt Trailer registered until April 09 trailer has some rust. Includes Life Jackets, Oars, Anchor, Bimini Top, Weather cover for boat and outboard. Fits 3 adults fishing comfortably. Fast reliable motor."

G'day

Nothing over 2k. But that's just me. Older basic hull, no fit out as far as I can see, engine and trailer old.

Maybe a little less?

Hi,

I would say the outboard would be mid to late 1980's. A friend of mine purchased a brand new3.7m Quintrex punt in 1991/92 with a 15hp Mariner, and it had a totally different engine cowl design. I would say it's worth $1500-1800.

Cheers

Trailer looks like it needs some work or replacement. Make sure you aren't buying a headache. There's "cheap" and there's "good value" ;-) Sus out how motivated the seller is before you make any offers.

My guess on the Mariner is early to mid 80's, quite likely the original motor that was bolted to the boat ?

G'day

RE The mariner, I was thinking mid to late 80's.

I think Spaniard King would have a fair idea

I had a 4 meter runabout apparently built by Greg Haines (or his business) during the early '80s when Haines Hunter was taken over. The trailer even had stickers "Trailer by Greg Haines". The rig in the picture has the same bow and stern rails however the transom on mine was cut away further toward the centre.

Have a good look for any deep pitting and cracked floor/rib/thwart welds.

Cheers
